April 1 - Brook - Today was a change over day to our new Host Families from the Auckland East Rotary Club. This morning was a relaxing morning enjoying an extra hour's sleep as New Zealanders adjusted their clocks for daylight savings time. For my last morning with Peter and Sally Ross, we went to the French Market to enjoy a cappuccino. I was a little confused at first and thought that we were going to "Morgan" for the french market. But I quickly learned that I was being treated to a ride in Peter's Morgan! What a treat, this is a car that would NEVER be found in the great white north.... well maybe I don't know if you can get snow tires for sports cars!
As it turns out this was an appropriate start to my day, after this I was dropped off at the official final Soap Box Derby for New Zealand. The winner's of this derby won a trip for their family to the USA to participate in the international finals. What a treat to see the Auckland East rotary club in action. It is an amazing event for children in the local schools. Many different schools had a soap box or "Trolly" and worked very hard in their teams and supported the drivers. The excitement in their faces was infectious as the final 8 teams changed their wheels to the official All-American Derby Wheels. One child remarked "man.... these are clean" as he spun the new wheel. The GSE team was also treated to a race down the track in the corporate cars. It was neck and neck for a while between Brenda and myself but..... as hard as I tried Brenda passed the finish line first : ) Then it was back to our new host families house's for the evening.
