Now we have travelled from Hamilton, where I last wrote. I will try to get some photos up in the next couple of days but most of the time when I connect to Internet, I have limited amount of Mb that can use, but as I said hopefully soon.
Anyhow, we travelled from Hamilton to Rotorua where we stayed four nights. The first day we just relaxed and in the evening we went to Mitai, a Maori village with a traditional performance and hangi (maori food). It was a nice performance and the food was great BUT it felt VERY touristi and commercial. But the performance was nice and it was interesting to try food cooked traditionally which means it cooks under the ground somehow and slow cooks for hours which results in flavour ful and tender meat. The backpackers as we are, enjoyed this very much, especially the desserts.
Rotorua is a thermal spot so of course we had to visit a thermal village with an active geysir and that, we did the following day. We started of walking around admiring boiling and bubbling hot pools in different shapes and colours. Then we had to take the car, about 2 km (it was not so safe to walk as it is thermal activity) to watch the geysir Lady knoxs erupt. We were a little bit suspicious reading on thë information sheet that it erupted 10.15 daily, but we thought 'why not' so we went there and there were rows with benches to sit for at least a good houndred tourists to sit and watch. Then a man came and started to talk for a while and put soap in the geyser to make it start. Then we felt very disappointed since we had thought it was natural and spontanous eruptions. In other words, if you want to stay out of tourist traps- don't go there. After wards we went to Hells Gate Geothermal spa with thermal walk followed by a relaxing mud bath and spa bath. It was a nice finish before hitting the town to meet Becca and Ian (two friends from Herm Island)
Now in Napier, a very sweet town which seems to honour the era from the 40s. We stopped in Gisbourne for a couple of nights before and we surfed 2 hours and spend some relaxing time there.
Now we are heading towards Taupo where we have some exciting activites to look forward to. After that we are heading to Wellington where I will celebrate my birthday. Then we are heading over to the south island to see what that has in store for us!
over and out
