We are now, south of Auckland after we have completed our journey through Northland.
I was in Aiphara when I last wrote and there we stayed two nights as they didn't have the horse trekt we wanted to do that day.
it was fantastic to start the day on horseback, hear the waves roar and horses occational snort before setting of in canter. We rode on the beach for 2 hours and then it was time to head off to Rawene where we had booked a room for the night. It was Rawene Motor Camp for 20 dollars, which certainly was okay for us. Sand surfing was also something we had been wanting to try and the sand dunes in Hokianga was suppose to be good for that. We took Hokianga Express from Opononi which took about 10 minutes and we could sand board for about an hour after we headed fo a walking trek we wanted to walk with waterfalls and swimming holes, but went too far and by the time we realised that, it seemed too late to go back. BUT we did stop at a pussel collectors museum in the middle of the forest and spend a couple of minutes trying very hard with some brain teasers. An interesting collection that differed from many other things I have seen so far in my life.
Later that day we had a pick nick lunch in the grass somewhere in a ditch- simple but nice.
We also returned to Russell/ Paihia where we picked up some mail but also going on a dolphin cruise. Aparently these dolphins are completely wild- not fed by humans or any other contact with unless they want to and therefore it felt more special when we were lucky enough to see plenty. They moved really fast so I couldn't get a good picture and the one I eventually got, was blurry.
Whangarei was the next stop and we stayed there for three nights. Of course, in Whangarei, Whangarei Waterfall is a must and we wanted to do a bit of "tramping" also known as hiking . We decided for a 3 hour walk along a river in a rainforest. I guess we must have read the map wrong or maybe it was badly marked, because we had to back track and walk a LONG way a long a car road which wasn't really what we hoped for and it ended up taking about 5 hours instead. It was however, a very nice walk and very relaxing. Tired, hungry as we were it was nice to get to a hostel with nice clean bed linen, and a long shower before hitting the town for a well deserved beer.
Pictures are coming.
over and out
