ok ok i know it's been a while. Terrible dedication and all that. But we have been busy. BUSY! So my apologies to all. I try and redeem myself now.
After we left Byron Bay, we went up and spent 3 weeks in Deception Bay (real place name. Seriously, google it) with Verity's family friend Dave. It was 3 weeks spent chilling out, going to Brissy to see chums and generally taking time out from hostel living. That's all I'm going to say because that's all there is to say really. Oh, and we stayed with Verity's Mum for about a week. Fantastic cook. Ate far too well for backpacker.
Next stop on the journey was Noosa. We arrived in Noosa, and got minibussed to our hostel, which was a really nice hostel. Little kitchen/living room areas with bedrooms leading off. We went into town to look at deals for our Fraser and Whitsunday trips. After a bit of shopping around, we booked a good deal with Peter Pan's we also gave us a free canoe trip in Noosa along with other various add ons. So we chilled out for a day, then went on the canoe trip. We got picked up from bus station in minibus driven by Alan (funny old b***** really) and driven via supermarket and bottle shop to our campsite. The campsite was called Gagaju (insert gasp of shock or immature giggle here) and it was...a campsite. Complete with huge TV screen (and DVD collection) and longdrop. Nice. So we spent the afternoon in the campsite, and after our briefing for our trip (it was to be self guided) we sat around and got to know the other guys who were going. Cue much drinking and then sleep. Awoke next morning, had breakie, then went canoeing. There were 5 canoes for the 15 of us (you do the math) and we paddled as a convoy down river for bout an hour to designated stop off point. Got out of canoe, and were met by loads of Kangaroos. Had picture taken with them, fed them a little bit, and then walked on toward beach. Half hour walk got us there, just in time for the monsoon that happened. Arse. So we walked back to the pub (where else) and killed time in there before paddling back to camp. Not the most successful day, truth be told. Day two we were going up river to a lake where we were to find a rope swing, and our campsite for the night ahead. Took about 2 hours and many a mossie bite to get there. After some frolicking on rope swing (no I didn't. Bad shoulders you know, not worth risk) we went to campsite and set up our tents. Then we walked to pub, but had missed all you can eat carvery. Gutted. So had drink, went back to campsite, played tennis and basketball (popped shoulder little bit - no lasting effect though) and went to pub in evening for evening meal. Very nice. Got back and made campfire, eventually, and sat around drinking. Then bed. Woke up in middle of night to Becky(roommate) telling me I had to get out of bed because Mark (boyfriend. Her's, not mine) had chundered everywhere. No joke. Not cool. So went and got cosy with Verity and her roomies. Northerners. Charming people. Never say 'the' though. Just give little head flick where 'the' should be. God knows what they do if they have to name the band 'The The'. Is contagious habbit. Find yourself never saying 'the' either. Madness. Anyway, I digress. b***** all sleep, canoe back in morning slightly worse for wear, but nonetheless chipper. Get back tut campsite (see what i did there?) and spend afternoon watching films before being delivered back to hostel. Next day head to Rainbow Beach.
Rainbow Beach. Home of Fraser Island access. Fraser Island is biggest sand island in world. Fact. Get to hostel, dump stuff and go to Fraser Island briefing. Self drive tour see. Many dingos. Must be prepared. 33 people on our tour for following day. 3 4X4 trucks. We got put into teams by some lady, and then, after watching safety viedo of how to fend off dingos (all codswallop mind) we have brief chat with teammates. Introductions made. Jokes made (by some). Then enters Merv. 4X4 owner. Serious chat about looking after trucks. And selves. Gives us plan of action; where to go, what to see, where to camp, when to and not to drive. Good lad, slightly weird. But who isn't. After plans made, we order alcohol. I say alcohol, I mean goon. Then, time is our own, so we stay in bar, chill out over a few drinkies, make friends. Then hit hay in preparation for early start. Early start comes round early, make way to free breakfast (pancakes: yummy) and coffee (have become bit of an addict truth be told) and then onto Merv and the trucks. Load stuff as advised by Merv's roof plan, check trucks for bumps and scratches and the like, then on we go. In convoy to ferry which takes us across to Fraser, then off north we drive to Indian Heads. Took about 2 hours to get there, very numb bottom by time of arrival. Anyway, lovely views of sea and island. Head back down after photos. Was cushion for girl who fell over on way down. However, she was lovely and apologetic, quite nice to talk to, almost made her late for her bus. Back at truck, we had lunch and drinkies (for those not driving) and then headed to campsite for night. Got there, set up tents, had a laugh with others from other trucks. Good times. Food was cooked, goon was consumed, and drinking games commenced. Made it to bed at... Slept fully clothed. Had beer jacket on. Woke up (far too early if you ask me) had breakfast, did washing up (in sea), loaded trucks and drove to Lake Mackenzie. Gorgeous place, lovely clear water, no salt, much sunshine. Swim for long time, then lunch. Sandwiches and the like. Then head to camping spot for night. Only just made it. Race against the tide. Found it eventually, met up with other trucks, put up tents and awning, then had manly game of American football and then Rugby on beach. Got a sweat on, much testosterone flowing. Felt masculine. Very very masculine. Had food, then got onto the drinking. Many a drinking game with all people involved (nearly). Then got a dancefloor going, before befriending some Irish from over the way. Chatted with them, went to their campsite for longer than I thought, had stroll on beach (awww, how romantiic) then went to bed. About half 4. Was rudely awoken by Pete (great lad, Brummie, crazy hair) at half 7. No sleep for me after that. After packing all gear up, and breakfast of course, we went to another lake, had a gander, then back to ferry port to get back to mainland. Filled up on petrol, went and cleaned trucks, then headed back to hostel. Had shower (had bought back most of sand of island with us. Not much left there now) before drinking in bar. Happy days. Prepare to head to the town of 1770 next day.
