ok, byron bay. hippie land. Now before launching into tales of our adventures, I feel I should point out, the whole hippie thing doesn't appeal to me (Todd). It's just too much free love and cannabis for my tastes. So if i seem less than enthusiastic, my profound apologies. Verity on the other hand loves it. The hippie culture that is, not the free love and cannabis. At least i don't think so...
MONDAY: arrived at the bus stop in the pouring rain. no scratch that, a monsoon. got off and collected our bags and found the minibus for the hostel we were staying at. eventually drive arrived and we headed to the hostel, via a little guided tour of the town. Checked into hostel and dumped our bags in room, where, to my horror, I found i was sleeping above a double bed. Cue horrible thoughts of people 'befriending' eachother as i try to sleep. Eeeewwww. Anyway, we headed into town (walked for some God beknown reason) to meet the people we met in Port Mac. Wandered around in the rain and had a rather pricey lunch ($10: OUCH. We are backpacking you know!) before making plans for the evening and heading back to hostel for shower and relaxation. In the evening we went to the other guys (from here on in they'll be known as 'chums') hostel, thankfully by taxi. The chums were staying at an Arty (farty) hostel, where you'd assume by walking through the entrance that footwear was illegal. Those crazy hippie types. Anywho, there was a talent night on which turned out to be very good. When they say talent night, they mean singing and occasionally a guitar player. There was one chap who did a rather impressive rendition of some Artic Monkeys song, then suddenly became Macie Gray. In voice obviously. Honestly, if you were just walking by, you'd of believed that ol' Macie herself was in there. Astonishing.
TUESDAY: Oh jolly good, the rain continues! I actually missed it while I slept. Another day spent wandering the streets of Byron Bay, seeing the sights and figuring out a plan for Lara's birthday celebrations, which were to commence that evening. In the evening we went to the chums hostel to 'get ready' and drink much goon. Now for all those who don't know what goon is, count yourself lucky. It's extraordinarily cheap and revolting boxed wine. 4 litres for $10. That's 5 English pounds to you and I. Says it all really. Anyway we headed into town, (with some very nice Dutchies in tow - Verity) into Cheeky Monkeys, where some tanked up tourists were having to strip to try and win some competition. Tragic really. So we left there and went to LaLaLand (nothing to do with teletubbies). We got away with not having to pay to get in, which was lucky really beause there were about 4 other people in there. Atmosphere of a wake. So we left there (poor old Lara thought she was jinxed) and went to Cocomangas. Which was where everyone was hiding! They played terrible old school tunes, which I'm reliably informed are "good to bop away to". Spent the rest of the night in there, before retiring to sleeping quarters.
WEDNESDAY: Awaken to find that a big bright yellow object had appeared in the sky. One of the locals told us that it was called 'the Sun'. This sunshine continued, so we got the chums together and headed for the beach. Much tanning and swimming followed, interrupted only by a walk to get Subway lunch. Yummy. Fulfilled the cravings after 2 days without one. I myself spent the evening asleep (caught the Sun me thinks - whoops) whilst Verity spent the evening watching the Sun go down on the beach, and getting acquainted with local doggywogs. See facebook for picture/s. God knows what she did at night (God is omniscient ya'know) but everyone (including our new Scouse roomies) was tucked up and sound asleep when I awoke in darkness. NB Verity spent the evening eating falafel and drinking goon. "What a night" - Verity. Bless her simpleton socks.
THURSDAY: Transferred from hostel to Arts factory hostel so we could be closer to our chums. As it turned out we were in their room. Can't get much closer than that now can you!? Spent the rainsoaked day (aahhh our good friend rain) playing pictionary. which my team lost. Even though we had an 'artist' on our team. Verity's team won, though I'm pretty sure they cheated. I'm glad they did win actually, because the thought of the ever-so-competitive Verity losing just doesn't bear considering. Adam, you know what I mean. In the evening, me and the chums, minus Verity, went to the onsite cinema to see 'He's just not that into you'. I fell in love all over again with Scarlett Johansson. Honestly, I love her. Afterwards, we went to the Buddha bar to meet Verity and the Dutchies at the open mike night. Just a rerun of the talent show in all truthnessness. Just less hippies, and not the overpowering smell of cannabis. I discovered Sangria at $10 a jug. Can't argue with that. (Again, backpacker here)
FRIDAY: After breakfast with Verity, I went for a run while she went back to sleep. Bad idea, nearly vomitted. Still, when everyone awoke and got watered (cold shower) and fed, Vez, Emma, Lara and I went for a walk to the most easterly point of Australia, and then up to this lighthouse that I'd like to say was worth the physical exertion, but really it wasn't. However, every cloud has a silver lining, and on the way up we saw a whole load of dolphins frolicking in the sea. Emma got some great pictures, and the rest of us, well, didn't. Went back to hostel, where Vez and Lara and Dutchies went in swimming pool in the monsoon. Fools. Lucky they didn't catch their death in there. Had a few bevvies in common room, before hitting the hay, as me and the V monster were leaving the next morning!
