Van and Matt's Big Adventure
Our Christmas holiday started with a 4:45 am alarm after a packing mission until 1am the previous night. We took off out of Stavanger in the dark morning sky, making our way eastward across Norway to Oslo, where we would stopover for 5 hrs on this big day of travelling. We stocked up on some essential Christmas Aquavit in the Oslo duty free and found ourselves a quiet place to chill out until we got kicked out due to not being on the flight to Morocco. When the wait was finally over, we boarded our flight to Geneva. On arrival, we faced another wait, 3 hours this time, until the bus to Tignes. The bus went relatively quickly, perhaps helped by the small bottle of red wine and a little bit of shut eye. We arrived to greet Matt's family and Van spoiled Matt's attempt to give them a fright as they had mistakenly thought we were pulling up in the big bus that arrived rather than the van.
We navigated along the snow laden footpath to our abode for the next week, a cute wee apartment that looked out across a golf course / husky circuit covered in snow.
The next days were filled with skiing, eating, celebrating, trips to the patisserie and general relaxing. Some of the memorable moments of each day:
Sunday 21st
- First day on the slopes. We lost Karen on the first run of the day.
- First visit to the intriguing La Folie Douche. Mulled wine, tartan, leather, and heavy bass merged to create a memorable visit.
Monday 22nd
- Met up with NZ guys at the only bar open in Val Claret and went out for dinner
- Ski ski ski
Tuesday 23rd
- Ingrid & Karen went on a husky sled adventure
- Ski ski ski
Wednesday 24th
- A pretty neat free circus over at Le Lac.
- Matty's first try of frog legs which he found pretty tasty.
- And, ski ski ski
Thursday 25th
- Christmas Day! A nice breaky, present opening, and a little time on the slopes.
- Attempted to make a snow man - attempted being the operative word.
- Karen made her best efforts to light the fire
Friday 26th
- Our longest day on the slopes as we wanted to make the most of the last day. Began with a perilous icy slope and black run moguls before a more chilled (both meanings of the word 'chilled' are relevant here) afternoon.
- Matty and I were the chefs of the night, making carbonara for dinner.
- Met Matty's second cousin and her husband
Saturday 27th
- We arose at 6.30 to heavy snowfall outside. We loaded up into the taxi and what was usually a 35 minute journey was instead an 80 minute drive which included a 180deg slide turn and some dedicated efforts by our taxi driver to get us to the train on time. Alas, we arrived running along the platform as we saw the train starting to pull away. Fortunately, we were able to book another train that arrived 10 mins earlier and with 2 less changes than the previously planned train
