Early morning flight saw us arrive in Copenhagen around 7am. We took the train to central station, dropped off our bags, then it was time to explore what Copenhagen had to offer. Our activities for the day started with a walk through the main shopping street - strøget - trying to find a place to get some brekky. Unsurprisingly, everything was pretty closed at 8am on what we soon found out was a public holiday - the great prayer day. Eventually we found ourselves at Nyhavn, a waterside tourist hotspot, and managed to get an eggs & bacon breakfast there. We then walked onward to the Citadel and the little mermaid sculpture, donated to the city by Carl Jacobsen, and a depiction of Hans Christian Anderson's well known storybook character. It was soon time for lunch. We had wanted to try Mormors but it was shut so back to Nyhavn we went for a classic burger and some fries. Van got a Nyhavn beer while Matt opted for the Czech Praga. After this we were quite tired (a 6am flight had meant a 4hr sleep the preceding night) so it was time for an afternoon nanna nap. Post sleep we went and looked at Saint Jørgens lake area before meeting up with Matty's cousin for dinner at a tradition Danish style restaurant. We opted for steak, beef, and calf liver and were very happy with our meals. Matt and Andrew were also happy with their 750mL beers. Finished the evening with a Leffe night cap at a nearby bar before calling it a night.
SATURDAY
After a much needed sleep in we took a stroll down the shopping street again trying to find an elusive bakery we had spotted the day before. We couldn't find it and so we had a nice coffee and brunch from one that we could find. We then did a little shopping. Etterpå, headed back to the hotel, had a little chill out time and then hired bikes and rode out to Christiania, a community within Copenhagen that kind of governs itself and has its own rules. We took a tour with one of the local residents and found this very interesting. The community is located where there was once old military barracks and weapons production area. We biked back home via a stop at some dockside trampolines and a bevy at Nyhavn. The evening activity was Tivoli amusement park- was great fun with some fireworks to end the night.
SUNDAY
Sleep in round two. First weekend we've had a chance to catch some quality zzz's. Classic coffee & croissant combo for breakfast, little bit of shopping and some smørrebrød for lunch. Then it was off to the Carlsberg museum for a bit of a tour and a couple of beersies. Very rainy afternoon so the indoor activity was perfect!
