After the morning drama we relaxed that afternoon in Lyon and went out for dinner where we had an impatient waiter and Karen ordered beef tartare. To her surprise, that meant raw beef mince which the rest of us thought was a huge joke.
The next day we took it easy. We started off with a trip to the Les Halles de Lyon which is a nice food market and then tried to have lunch at appelez moi rose where Matt had planned to have frogs legs, but found that the owners had decided to have a Christmas break. We then wondered around the old part of Lyon, had some arcade challenges, checked out the tourist shops (as all the other shops are shut on Sunday!) and flicked through a few old prints. That night we went out to dinner at Brasserie Georges which is the oldest brasserie in the city and one of the largest brasseries in Europe. Delicious!
Monday was our truffle discovery with Henri and Anik. We started by taking a train out to meet Henri at the railway station. He took us straight to his favorite Nougat factory where we had a quick tour. He then showed us around the area (Chamaret) and took us to the truffle market, the most beautiful town in France and an old nymph church. It was windy and incredibly cold, so it was also nice to be sitting in the car. Next stop was back to his home to meet his wife Anik and begin truffle hunting in the backyard under the oak trees with his dog. We managed to find some tuber melanosporum truffles, but came up empty with the tuber brumale truffles which are the best and most expensive. Fortunately, Henri had a supply of tuber brumale! After some champagne, Henri and Anik laid out a fantastic five course meal (four of which included truffles). We had truffe croque au sel, omelette aux truffes, soupe style VGE and fromage aux truffes. Anik told us that this is what they have every Christmas with their family and that they did this especially for Karen and Keith's 35th wedding anniversary which was very nice of them. On the way back to the train station Henri showed us the local castle which was free because his cousin was on the desk and then it was back to Lyon.
