Friday 20 December:
- Flew from Stavanger to Munich and then headed off to the nearest beer hall, Augustiner Braustuben. Unfortunately a Christmas party was in full swing so we'll have to revisit that place over New Years. Damn. Then we popped into Tollwood for a nightcap where there was a December festival and it's where Oktoberfest is.
21 - 27 December:
- We trained from Munich to Innsbruck and then caught another train onto St Anton am Arlberg. Cam was there to meet us at the train station and we all caught a bus to our accommodation in Pettneu which is 15 minutes down the road. Then it was off the the ski shop to get passes, a burger from the local joint and a cheeky beer at the local pub, Fredals. The pub is owned by the local hero that got a bronze medal for skiing at some Olympics and now spends most of his time smoking and drinking at his own bar. Highlights of the next week are as follows:
• 94 ski lifts for €200 for 5 days - ridiculous even with 'poor' snow!
• Our pension host that had a very limited English vocabulary but was very sweet. On the 24th she left us with a whole plate of chocolates and some milky alcoholic drink and one morning she snapped us making lunch with the breakfast bread and provided us with wrappers.
• Apres ski every night (3.30pm sharp) - managed to tick off the Krazy Kangaruh, Mooserwrit and Underground. The Mooserwrit is a barn on the mountain with a ridiculous light show and DJ that goes hard each night and is the bar that sells the most beer in Austria. Underground is owned by a nutty 75 year old Kiwi lady and is very charming. All require some skiing once you've had a few rounds which was interesting and there's no dawdling with the last free bus at 5.55!
• A tour of the ski area from Yogi and Janne. Yogi is a German that owns a few restaurants and a hotel in Germany and has been coming to St Anton for 26 years and Janne is his 9 year old son that put us all to shame.
• A traditional Austrian dinner on the 22nd where we were fed far too much mountain water and on the 25th when we caught up with Brice and Ali for a Christmas dinner with their friends.
• Exploring the ski area that had a number of small Austrian towns within it. Matty's favourite was Lech which was a beautiful little town for high rollers and is where Prince Charles goes skiing.
• Fancy dinner at Brice and Ali's chalet. Their gig was free beer and wine for the week and a three course meal every night. Will definitely be eyeing up something similar next Christmas!
Next stop is Vienna after a 6 hour train and hopefully some time off the beers and some healthy food!
