For our third and final day in Berlin, we started by heading to Checkpoint Charlie. This was the Allies name for the crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. It's also where US and Russian troops faced each other with tanks during the standoff in 1961 which, if one had decided to shoot, most likely would have started WW3.
Right down the road was a part of the still-standing wall, and behind this was the museum of the Topography of Terrors. The whole area we were in was basically the nazi home base, and this museum was focused on their rise to power and so much more.
We walked out of this museum showing so many horrors of WW2, then right away you see the wall.... So much history in one city....
We headed over to the East Side Gallery, which is a huge part of the still-standing wall which is now one of the biggest open-air art galleries in the world. 105 artists total took part in painting different sections of the wall in 1990, and what they created was beautiful.
We went back to the hotel, ready to find a tasty place to have a beer. Dad started reading an email.... "Rucksack von Ms. Birdsal gefunden." Wait.... What?!?! No way!!!! We don't understand a whole lot of German, but that sounds like it means someone found my purse!! After some help from the hotel, we found out that my purse is at the police station in Ribnitz-Damgarten (I love that name), up by the Baltic Sea where it was stolen. Some incredibly nice people found it and worked really hard to find a way to contact Reimer, who then contacted us. Amazing!!! So.... change of plans! We went to bed so we could wake up bright and early and get our stuff back!!!
