Planes, trains, and automobiles.... And oh yeah, BOATS!!! That pretty much summarizes the final, awesomely long day of our trip.
We grabbed some espresso and met up with Dave in the morning - we're going to take a boat tour of the Rhine!! This is something we had both wanted to do at the beginning of our trip, but it was just too far away from Berlin and Munich. So, on our final day in Europe, here we are!
A quick train ride brought us to the start of the tour. We hopped onto the ferry boat, top level of course, so we could take in all the sights. And WOW were they some amazing sights! Throughout the trip we saw at least 10 castles and forts, cute towns alongside the river, and the famous Loreley rock. This rock marks the narrowest spot of the river between the North Sea and Switzerland.... The current is strong so there have been a lot of boat accidents - leading to famous myths and folklore, including stories of a female siren who distracts shipmen with her beauty and song, causing them to crash.
Don't worry! We made it though safe and sound. We wrapped up our tour in the small town of St Goar, where we mowed down some pizza while waiting for our train back to Mainz. We got our bags from Dave's place and said our goodbyes. Lots of hugs for our amazing our guide - see you in Iowa this summer!! Thanks for being such a wonderful host and friend! Dave snapped a cute picture of pops and I while we were walking away, to the train station.... Where we would then get on a plane..... Can we just switch our flights and go exploring for another week?!?!? No? Okay.... :(
Easy train back to Frankfurt... Easy airport, where we spent our final euros on a little bottle of wine. We got on our huge plane, and when we took off, we waved a final goodbye to Germany, and to Europe. We WILL be back!!
Dad snoozed and I watched three movies on the 8 hour flight to Chicago. Ahhhhh, English!! It's good to hear you again. Another easy flight to Minneapolis, where we were greeted by mom and Charlie at the airport. Charlie was just slightly excited to see my dad ;) It's good to be back.
We arrived home late that night, and thought to ourselves, were we really touring the Rhine this morning and looking at castles??
Thanks a million to my amazing father for making this an experience of a lifetime!!! I love you so much!!!!
And thank you for following us along through our journey!!!!
