Adiós, Barcelona.... You've been wonderful.... We will hopefully see you again. In the meantime, time to move on to the final destination in this wonderful journey - BACK TO GERMANY!! Woot woot!!
Bright and early, we hopped on a tiny, speedy plane to Frankfurt. It's so good to be back in Germany! Although we suddenly couldn't read signs or understand anyone around us, but at this point, we're pretty used to that. I can't wait to be home, just so I don't have to feel like I'm being rude when I talk to someone in English!
Our destination of Mainz was only a 20 minute train ride from the airport. When we arrived, there he was, waiting at the train station for us - DAVE GREDER!!! I'm so glad we were able to see our dear friend during this trip, especially since he will be leaving Germany soon to return to the University of Iowa, where he's kind of a big deal ;)
We dropped off our (at this point, completely massive) bags at Dave's place, then we took off to get a grand tour of Mainz. What a cool city! Mainz is the capital of the state of Rhineland, and the city is located right on the Rhine itself. It used to be a Roman fort city, and in the 1450s, it's where Gutenberg invented the printing press. So much history, I love it!
After enjoying a tasty lunch and catching up on life, Dave showed us several beautiful churches, quaint plazas, and we took a walk to see a panoramic view of the city. Exploring different old German towns has been one of the highlights of our trip. We then went back to Dave's building, relaxed and drank some wine, and we met some of his friends who live on his same floor. They are wonderful!
We both needed a nap, so we grabbed our bags and went to our hotel. It happens to be a beer garden too, and we were greeted by the owner, who has clearly been consuming her own product -- 'hellllleeooooo!!!!' We dropped our stuff off, took our nap, then headed back downtown to go have dinner with Dave. We strolled down the adorable streets to a cute neighborhood with a bunch of restaurants. Great dinner, great conversation.... We shared a hearty 'Prost' when we realized it was the last dinner of our trip :( It's gone by so fast!!
We walked Dave home, he used his awesome German-speaking skills to get us a cab, and we headed back to our hotel. Dad and I sleepily reminisced about our incredible trip as we fell asleep.
