Today we made our unexpected stop in Puerto Rico! Because we had to sail Northeast after departing the Bahamas, I guess there was a miscalculation in fuel amounts and we had to stop for a quick fill up. We arrived in the morning, and I did not get up to watch us pull in because we had no idea when we were due in. When I got up for my 8:30 am treadmill appointment, that's right you need to make appointments because of the high demand, I saw we were here. We stayed in the San Juan Bay all day as the ship refueled and finally departed around 5pm. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, all the cell phones were on "extended network" so they were out in full force. I was able to talk to mom and dad and had two fairy long conversations with Courtney so hopefully it was not extra money to talk in the extended network zone, but I did get the o.k. from dad to go ahead and use the phone. But nonetheless it was nice to talk to some familiar voices. We were not allowed off the ship because of the short time we were there and it was not an official stop on the trip, but I was able to get some great pictures of the shore and surrounding mountains.
Yesterday we received a list of the day trips up to and including India that we need to sign up for in two days. I picked out a few including a township visit in South Africa, two service projects in India, and a orphanage visit in Malaysia. I have not had any classes yet and there are a certain amount of "FDP's" or faculty directed programs that must be completed for each of my courses so hopefully they will not change my plans. I also am thinking of doing a home stay in Japan before going to visit Hiroshima, so hopefully the trips that I want to do will not fill up because if they do it is random out of those who signed up who gets to do it.
Tonight was the first official "pub night" on the ship. Students are allowed 4 drinks total, and no more than 2 an hour. Beer and wine was served for $3.50 a drink. Let's just say I will not be purchasing any of them this trip because I flat out can't afford it.
