Today was our first day aboard the MV Explorer. All of the students had assignments alphabetically on when they were supposed to board the ship, I was at 11:00 am. We stood in line at the security check for almost an hour before making it through all of the check in stations in about an hour and a half, which is quicker than I expected. After boarding, we checked into our rooms and unpacked our bags and tried to get somewhat settled before going to get lunch and wander the ship. The room size fairly similar to what I expected. Hopefully being on the inside without windows will be a huge advantage to try and catch up on some sleep. We had our first meal on the ship outside on deck 6. The food was decent but nothing compared to my campus center dining hall food at school. They said that every meals there is always potatoes and pasta stuff so I will definitely get my daily carb amounts.
The afternoon was spent really just getting settled in. There were parents on board till 3:00 p.m. then they were told to say their goodbyes and depart the ship. First and foremost before setting sail was the safety "drills" where we all had to go out on the decks to assigned lifeboats and basically just stand there in long pants and hats for almost a half hour while roll call was made to make sure everyone was accounted for. In case of a real emergency you are supposed to wear long sleeves, pants, and a hat to keep you insulated in the water. We finally set sail around 5:00p.m. and we watched as the Bahamas slowly faded away. We had dinner and sat out on the decks and soaked in the fact that we were finally on our way to sail around the world.
At 8:00 we had a orientation meeting where all the students and faculty gathered in the student union for a brief introduction to everything that is going to be happening and the basic "do's" and "don'ts" of the ship. Afterwards, most students scrambled to get the internet/email up and running on their laptops as this was the first opportunity for them to do so all day.
