Writing this blog back on SA soil, a great feeling to be back in the state. Since the last blog we have travelled quite some distance from Albany. 1st stop was Ravensthorpe a small town on the way to Esperence, it was quite nice so we decided to stay a couple of days as we wished to visit Fitzgerald NP. However the park was closed due to the resurfacing of the road through it and it was going to be 12 months before it was finished. The town of Ravensthorpe provided a scenic drive through the fire tracks in the hills behind the town to see the wildflowers. This was a great drive and the 28km took us about 3 hrs to complete as it was quite rough going in places and there were many flowers to see.
On to Esperence, needed to be there before 12 noon to catch the start of the AFL Grand Final, big dollars on this game with $12-00 up for grabs for the lucky tipster. b***** a drawn game means we have to wait another week to see how wins big !!. Esperence is a lovely spot and would be great in summer. Caught up here again with a family we first met in Monkey Mia who are from Athelstone. We did the scenic drive on the Great Ocean Drive which took in the local beaches and headlands. These beached would have to be some of the most amazing in Australia. The next day we had a bit of a rest day as Trent was not well so Nic, Locky & Lyla went to the local Aquatic centre with heated pools. On to Cape Le Grand National Park which we have been looking forward to for some time as it is reputed to be one of the most beautiful NP's in WA. Have to agree with this as the beaches and scenery were truly amazing. Lucky Bay has the whitest sand in Australia and squeeks when you walk on it. Nic & Locky made the climb up Frenchmans Peak (Trent waited at the bottom with Lyla). Nic was very pleased with herself for completing this one.
Time to make some tracks as we need to start to get a little closer to home so of we head to Kalgoorlie home of the Superpit and the Hay Steet Brothels. Visited the Superpit the 1st night we were there it looked incredible lit up and operating at night. Just got there before they closed the after dark viewing until the new lookout is completed and operational in about a week. Next day on the the Miners Hall of Fame, must say this was a little disapointing due to lack of organisation and a tour guide who more interested in expressing his personal opinions about everything, we were not the only ones who felt this way. Trent , Locky & Lyla stayed at the Miners Hall of Fame whilst Nic visited Questa Casa.Questa Casa is the only original working Brothel in Kalgoorlie and is over 100 years old. They run tours each day at 2pm, so Nic joined the tour and learnt the Tricks of the Trade so to speak. Nic was the only person under 50 on the tour and got a laugh at the Grey Nomads who were not so innocent !!. A must do whilst in Kalgoorlie.
From Kalgoorlie we are now on the homeward stretch so we decide to do some Km's the next day as it is raining so we travelled about 600km, along the longest straight stretch of road in the country ( 147km) and into the Nullabor Plains stopping at Caiguna Roadhouse as the roadside rest areas were awash with the rain and very muddy. the next day we arose to blue sky and a planned stop at Mundrabilla Roadhouse for fuel and to watch the footy in the Roadhouse bar. We stayed to watch the game and Lyla had some much need crawling time in the Bar. Trent has won the $12-00 picking Collingwood by 42pts. As we have changed time to Central Western Time and soon to be SA time we decide to have a roadside stop over the border about 10km's past Border Village. A great roadside stop with some good distance from the Highway to reduce the Truck noise. We had a fire that night but due to the fact the wood was still damp from rain it was more smoke than fire, and with the van's 12volt power system playing up we called it a night. The next morning we woke to Fog, a sea fog had come in and it was quite thick , Trent went for a bike ride further down the track to see where it lead about 2km's later he was at the coast line looking out into fog ( nothing was visible about 30mtr in from of you). That day we only have about 180km's to travel to Nullabor roadhouse as we plan to visit the Head of the Bight. Trent & Nic visited here about 16yrs ago when it was free with no boardwalk and you could walk right to the cliff edge to see the Whales. We were lucky as the Sea fog cleared suddenly about 40km from the Head of the Bight and gave us enough time to see the whales before is went across the area.
We felt the time change the next day having travelled through 3 time zones in the last 24hrs, we have lost 2.5hrs and it threw Lyla's sleeping habits or lack of habits out the window.
We are currently at Streaky Bay, it is quite amazing that you travel 20,000 km's and find a place like this which is literally on your doorstep. The Bay here is beautiful and the Caravan Park is right on the waterfront so we have decided to spend 3 nights here rather than travel further down Eyre Peninsula.
We are now just over a week from being back in Houghton and really looking forward to catching up with Family and Friends when we return.
Until then take care.
