Traveling Monkey's
Greetings all. Here I am at the beginning of my final week of classes and everything is going well, as far as classes go. However, there are major protests going on in Mexico City right now over the election results. You might have seen my photos of the protesters gathering around the Zocalo. There still there. Now they are talking about taking the airport over and possibly highways as well. Thats just fine, since I`m not flying out of here, but I do need to pick up my wife there on Saturday. I sent a letter of appeal telling them to hold off on their nation-wide political actions until Tara was here, but I`m not sure how receptive they will be.
For those who don`t know about it, the presidential election resulted in a victory for Calderon, a candidate from the PAN party, a conservative Christian party that current president Fox represents. However he won by less than .6% of the vote, opening the door for a recount. The courts have ruled that there is no need for a recount because the guy they wanted to win, won. Hence thousands of angry people getting angry. It beats our country where an election can openly be stolen and all we do is lampoon the thief on Saturday Night Live. Then again if citizens tried to take over public places in protests, the other sides supporters would just shoot them. Or the police would do it. So maybe the SNL skits are safer.
So my next week should be exciting, watching the news to see whats happening. Oh, I almost forgot. Oaxaca is one of our first planned stops when Tara arrives and there have been riots and shootings in the last week over teachers salaries. Its like Chicago! MEXICO RULES!
