Traveling Mandy
Thank you to everyone who has expressed concern regarding the whereabouts of the second sock. To us there has only been one sockey - the other sock paled in comparision and indeed chose not to come along with us to south america. I belive that he is most likely in a rubbish bin courtsey of the airplane cleaning staff - although, wouldn't be surprised if he is still on the plane exactly where we left it......
The highlight of yesterday was going to tango lessons. I was very impressed with Ashton's ability to dance - maybe he isn't such an IT geek after all. The class we went to had 'real' argentinians in it who actually had a clue about what they were doing. One of the instructors took us off to one side to do the gringo remedial lessons. We learnt two basic steps which means that it is only a matter of time before we are tango masters. At one stage i was dancing with one of the other (good) students who didn't speak any english. He was getting frustrated with me because i wans't doing something right so we went to ask the teacher to interpert. Apparently i was supposed to do what he said - to which i replied - 'but i don't like doing what i'm told'. I have decided that tango is a sexy but patriarcal dance.
Last night we went to dinner at a place we stumbled upon the other day around the corner from our hotel. It is a wine bar run by a husband, wife and son team. The food is wonderful and that have a great selction of wine. The wife remembered us and we got five star treatment - free champagne, extra dessert, kisses when we left....but then we were ordering 100 peso ($50) bottles of wine (which is a lot of money here). Those of you who are planning trips to beunos aires - this place is a must stop for dinner. i have the card so hit me up for the details when i get back.
We're going to try to get to uruguay today - we tried to have a conversation with the hotel staff last night about how to go about catching the ferry. there were lots of pointing to the phrase book. that was probably the hardest conversation we have had since we got here and we are still none the wiser.
Yesterday was also the first time we got taken for a ride (literally). We got a cab (which up until now have been fine) and we told the driver the wrong thing (proving that pointing and nodding does not always work) but then when we realiased and corrected him he took us all around the world to get back to where we had to be. Thank god kirsty has a good sense of direction as i dÃdn't have a clue. We ended up figuring out the word for stop and getting out and getting another cab. That was the first time that we felt we had been ripped off (and it only cost us $2.50) so i guess that is not too bad.
Interesting Beunos Aires fact for the day - instead of people washing windows at the light they do busking - mostly juggling, sometimes firethrowing. They do a whole act with it and its very brave as I wouldn't want to get in the way of a taxi......quick way to loose a limb.
Going to try to find another internet cafe to download photos before we leave for Lima on wednesday night....
