hola
still stuggling to upload photos so have taken heaps but can't share them with you yet. sigh.
last night we went to a tango show. there are lots of them here so it was a bit hit and miss about which one to go to. luckily we hit - it was amazing. there were six couples in the show and each had their own tango 'personality'- one couple was young and slutty, one was prim and proper, one was young love sweet and innocent. the dancing was passionate and full of desire as well as being technically wonderful. anyone who makes the tango look easy is good at it! the finale was where they were dancing on tiers of stage prop made out to look like shadow boxes - three tiers high. each shadow box was lit individually so it flashed between each couple. amazing stuff - a real spectical. the best bit of the night was having a couple of argentine old ladies called kirsty and i 'gringos when we were 'standing in line for the banios. we don't think it was meant as a term of affection. on the whole people are really friendly. in fact i got hit on by a garbage man when we were walking down the street the other night. there is something very appealing about a man hanging off the back of a truck woolfwhistling with one hand and picking up garbage with the other. the people here just throw their rubbish on the pavement and the garbos seem to come by every night to pick it up. bascially that means that you are side stepping between rubbish (in addition to the pot holes) when you walk around the streets - nice.
the corners that don't have paint shops on them have pizza cafes. there seems to be an obesession with italian food. there is a police person (and yes there are hot police chicks) on every second corner. the ones near important buildings have flack jackets on. one said hola to us the other day, so they are friendly but i have no dobut they would take a bribe if offered.
we have witnessed the results of the crazy driving, having seen two seperate motocycle accidents since we have been here. not good. don't they know that people tend not to be so good off when they get hit by cars?
Today we went on a city tour. some of it we had already seen under our own steam, but we went to two new sectors of the city - san talmo and la boca. la boca is a big tourist area stuck in the middle of extream poverty. it was really odd to have all these tour buses drving up and down streets where the poverty is so bad. didn't really like it as we felt that it was taking advantage of the poverty. also, the tour took us to show us the most polluted river in argenitna. not somthing that one would think they would want to point out???
we are trying to organise tango lessons and are planning to hit uraguay before we head off to lima.
its 3:30 so we are just going to have a siesta and then head out for another meal. We are bascially eating and drinking our way around the city.
