Tuesday 3 June, Day 9.
Sailed into Port Vila around 7.00am this morning. An excellent natural harbour the weather gave us both sun between the clouds, and a beautiful rainbow behind the ship. Early morning cuppa in the Palette Bar at the stern of the ship before breakfast au naturel. We are at one of only 3 ports where we can moor to the wharf, so an easy disembark for our 9.00am trip to the Mele Cascade some 20 minutes drive the other side of town. The central business district of Vanuatu's capital doesn't look too different to the way we remember it from 32 years ago on our Honeymoon cruise. Lots of Chinese-owned shops and Australian banks.
The walk up the falls takes a leisurely pace with stops for demonstrations of the useful plants. Kathy receives a natural rain hat. Although it was damp and drizzled, the temperature and humidity were very comfortable. Another stop to listen to some lads from the "Youth Mission" sing a couple of songs, donations gratefully received. The walk was mostly on easy paths but the last section up to the spectacular high falls was rough. Luckily the limestone was not slippery. We just wore swimmers and took our cameras. A swim, and lots of photos in the spray. A selection of local fruits awaited us on return to the car park.
This afternoon is a bit grey and rainy, so your correspondent is relaxing near the top of the ship on Deck 9 at the Bar de Soleil. Not much "soleil" at the moment but just nice sitting sheltered from the warm rain. Life is hard! Volcano on Tana Island tomorrow, and weather looks OK for the next few days.
