T&KonTour
Monday 2 June, Day 8
We arrive on schedule at Ambryn and anchor off the island. We take the tender to shore for what was supposed to be a strenuous 3 hour tour, 2 hours of which was a walk into the hills through the jungle to Fana village. But it is raining so the track is too difficult and we move to an alternative dancing area, only 15 minutes walk. So we get a bit wet in the warm rain but miss out on the strenuous bit. The locals greet us and we see the Rom Dance which is a sacred event associated with magic. The dancers wear "nambas" or penis sheaths and some have magic masks that are used only once and then burned to get rid of evil spirits. Lots of stamping and banging of tamtams (slit gongs made out of tree trunks).
