Hi all,
Thanks a million for all the messages on the message board. We love reading them. We are currently at a nice little hotel in Napa - recommended by a colleague. On arrival, we ordered chocolate covered strawberries and "sparkling wine" (fantastic ! G thinks all hotels should offer this service!!) - today, we have had a full day of wine tasting - driven around in a luxury van. We met a great couple from Israel on our tour. Hopefully we will be able to add more photos in the next few days - hotel wi fi connections seem to be a bit tricky - so photo loading is a problem!
We had a great time in San Francisco - we both agree that it's probably the most quirky town we have visited. Very arty and free thinking - B feels that there a far too many folk that are not "contributing!"
On Thursday, we caught public transport into the city (called the BART) and then a taxi to our friend Darren's place. As it turned out, we were locked out until he arrived back from the airport - having flown in from a few days in the Botswana bush... braving elephants, hippos and lions in a TENT!!!
On Friday we headed into town - did a bit of shopping and then took the "cable car" which is a bit like a tram over the VERY hilly suburbs to Lombard Street - "the crookedest street in the world". We then walked over to a nice park area and had an afternoon wine party before carrying on up the hill to Coit Tower - which was a great look out point over the city. We then made it across town by traditional tram to the Castro for dinner.
On Saturday, we had perfect weather - hot with not a cloud in the sky. We went walking in Golden Gate Park - spent a lot of time taking photo's of flowers and an elusive humming bird!! and also had the chance to go up another tower to check out the city and then made our way to the Japanese Tea Garden. We then caught a cab to the tourist trap that is Pier 39 where we saw ALOT of tourists, but also had a chance to see the city's resident sea lion colony. We then went out for dinner in the Mission - a great Thai restaurant!
Yesterday, we hired a car and went south of the city to Monterey - and checked out a highly recommended aquarium - which was GREAT! It was another perfect weather day, so we took the opportunity of doing the 17 mile drive (thanks Brooke & Christian for the suggestions!!). After that we shot straight through to Napa.
We had a great evening here in the hotel, sitting out on the patio next to a large gas fire and chatting. Amazing to think that we have only been away for 2 weeks and still have 14 to go!!
Hope you are well where you are in the world.
We fly to Australia tomorrow night - Oz here we come!!!
