The Adventures of Annie, Rys & Jo
This entry is much nicer to write as we are on an internet, which isn't quite so painfully slow!
Each place we visit in India seems to get better and better. We had a brilliant time in Jaipur, mostly due to our hotel and our day of site seeing! We met a richshaw driver, named Rajak, whom at first we thought was just like the rest of them; annoying and trying to get money from us, but we were very wrong. He was an absolute legend who didn't try to rip us off at all! He showed us all the best sites and took us to a very nice place for lunch! We visited a lot of different shops and factories selling jewellery, handcrafts and textiles. Although this was a lot of fun, especially being dressed up in saris (see the pictures), it was very exhausting. They literally show you every single item in the shop and don't take no for an answer- we have yet to perfect our haggleing technique!
When we were walking up to a fort at the end of the day to watch the sunset, Rajak ran up after us to make sure that we were alright on our own! He had so much energy and really lifted our spirits, which was exactly what we needed! It is refreshing to know that there are people you can trust! Although I don' t think that we will ever get used to the staring and the crazy rickshaw drivers who stop for nobody and driving on the wrong side of the road seems to be perfectly acceptable!
We had a very pleasant journey to our next stop, Agra -air conditioned bus! Although we arrived to a very dark city as it had a power cut, and the richshaw driver decided not to drop us at our hotel! We have discovered that accepting help from the pushy richshaw drivers is the best way to do it as trying to find things on your own is simply exhausting and we think that we may have been a bit stubborn so far!
We managed to watch the world cup final, with a number of different nationalities and being 6hrs ahead over here it went on very late!
Our hotel in Agra is really nice, with a garden and outside restaurant, although it has a scarily large number of insects! In our room so far (and mostly in Annie's backpack) there has been a ghecco, cockroaches, ants, flying ants, a cricket and a spider. It goes without saying that we have opted to sleep with our mosquito nets up!
We saw the Taj Mahal today which was absolutely amazing. It is incredible and as described by our bible (the lonely planet guide) 'A teardrop on the face of eternity.'
hope everyone is well,
we are currently sat in an internet cafe in the middle of a monsoon!
lots of love
Carys and Annie
