The Adventures of Annie, Rys & Jo
Waking up to a boiling hot room, as the AC we had longed for had been shut off due to a power cut (which frequently happens as the whole city runs on a single generator!), Breakfast consisted of cheese toasties from the rooftop restaurant (since their chef was at a wedding). I think we have been overloaded with carbohydrate, as we are too afraid to sample the meat and salad! We had a big day of sight seeing, just look at the photos and you'll see the amazing views of the blue city!
We decided to treat ourselves at a nice restaurant with copious amounts of chowmein and ice cream and beer!!!!!!! So good!
We also managed to switch off with some well deserved English TV; Sex and the City and Cayote Ugly!!! Sometimes the hustle and bustle is just too much.
When paying the bill of the hotel, we refused to pay the agreed price as everything they offered didn't work; air con, internet, restaurant. After demonstrating our skills of persuasion we managed to pay a lower price "Good for me, Good for you!"
An incredibly early start to catch our train to Jaipur, which was (4.45am- and we thought getting up for 9am lectures was difficult!) a much more comfortable 5hr train journey, with air con!!! Definitely the way to travel out here. We arrived to an overwhelming amount of richshaw drivers trying to get us to go to their hotels. You wouldn't believe how persistent they are. We try to be as polite as possible, which doesn't work at all. If you ask them for directions they will tell you the wrong way so that you get lost and have to get in their richshaw. They drive at the pace you are walking and in front of you so that you have to stop- so annoying! Completely lost (and slightly defeated) we succumbed to a cycle richshaw, where this poor man had to pedal both of us and our backpacks! We soon lost sympathy when we realized that he had taken us the completely wrong direction. Shouting for him to stop didn't work so after 5mins of yelling and prodding he eventually did. A shouting match then ensued as we refused to pay (for kidnapping us!). We put a small amount of money on the floor and managed to escape into another richshaw who took us safely to our hotel ---phew. Thankfully the Pearl Palace hotel was truly a palace (of course recommended by our bible- the Lonely Planet). It has a lovely rooftop restaurant where we have enjoyed delicious FRUIT salads, FRUIT pancakes and FRUIT juice- finally!
We spent the evening chilling on the rooftop and putting the world to rights, reflecting on our journey- we shall now be known as The Wise Owls. Being under the stars overlooking the city and surrounded by fireworks going off, we remembered why we were here concluding that the trip so far in Annie's words was 'difficult and interesting' and in Carys' words 'challenging and exhausting' but if we were offered a ticket out of here we would decline and see it through to the end!
We are strong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope everyone is well
Lots of love
Annie and Carys
