During the last week of June 2011 we decided to visit my old varsity friend's farm, Cyferfontein in the southern Free State. Adriaan's good friend Oliver Schuurmans wanted to shoot his first buck and to experience a hunt. We love to visit Jan and Riette. This time of the year (winter) it can get very cold in the Free State with night and early morning tempreratures mostly near of below freezing point.
Before our departure the Western Cape had some snow falls and we saw snow on the Hex River mountains. We also visited Matjiesfontein, a historical old town that was an important railway station in the days gone by. We slept over at Kokos'ara, a guest farm near Beaufort-West on our way to the farm. En route we also stopped over at the Gariep Dam, the largest dam in South Africa which was also a first time experience for the children and Oliver and family. It was also an unusual sight to see the dam overflowing in the middle of winter.
Our three days at the farm was a fabulous experience. Olvier shot his first buck and Adriaan was given a "swart wildebeest' for his birthday by Jan. We took the meat to the butcher in Bethule who made us lovely biltong and droee wors. Oliver was also "initiated" by Jan on shooting his first buck. Who will forget the toast of "hou om hogere in...."
The girls enjoyed the outdoors and went a couple of times on outrides with the horses, bringing the cows home and enjoying the wide open expanse of the Free State. These are memories which will last a life-time.
We returned home after three wonderful days on the farm. Adriaan joined the Schuurmans who went to the Natal Drakensberg and then spent a couple of days in Plettenberg Bay before returning to Cape Town.
