Steinbeck asks the question about his journey: "What was I doing wrong? Was it going as I wished?" It's the usual question for me about this far in.
I'd gone to the usual sundowner bar a lot earlier than normal. I'd ordered a rum and had just happened on the above quote. A Belizian guy came up to me and said that the book 'better be about Belize'. I showed him the cover, saying it was universal. He replied that he'd read Steinbeck and that he was fine, but I'd be better off putting it down and looking at the view. He was right.
After a bit, I headed off intending to get a snooze but ran into some live music. Thought it was worth a sit down and a beer as an 'interesting' version of Knocking on Heaven's Door kicked in. Essentially, it was a jam session and everyone was invited - as I arrived the band was Cuban, Mexican and Canadian, but it changed many times over the next couple of hours. One highlight was the only guy within, say, 500 miles who didn't know the words to 'No Woman, No Cry' assuming lead vocals for that very track.
I was taken back to Derby, Western Australia, around 28 years ago when a similar set of covers was performed by The Warumpi Band - the Mexican singing bloke reminding me of George Burarrwanga (don't pretend you don't know him).
And so... it feels from this afternoon that the holiday has kicked in. The setting was great, the music life affirming (not the tunes particularly, but the enthusiasm) and the rum and cokes went down a treat. As ever, that means I'll be leaving tomorrow - swapping island life for colonial splendour, of sorts.
So that makes the track of the day Fitzroy Crossing. Judge me all you want.

Gillian Petrie Hi there Martin, Glad to know the holiday feeling has finally caught up with you. I trust you joined in with the band.... but I have to confess, I don't know the track 'Fitzroy Crossing'. Judge me all you want... LOL Could just do with a rum and coke myself right now. Anyway, make sure you post some interesting photos for us old stay at homes. Love Gillian
Gillian Petrie Just had a quick look at your other posts. Have to agreee about the fading charms of rustic buses once one reaches a certain age... and I guess you've now reached such an age. LOL The view from the island cabana looked heavenly....
