Just a quick note before a new city.
Leaving Belize was easy then fretful. Getting off the island went smoothly enough, but the planned relaxing decent coffee at The Radisson before a fixed price cab turned into an unlicensed ride in a 30 year old jalopy with a chancer. Why does this always happen to me? It must be the look on my face. The coffee was crap as well.
Taca Airline managed to instill confidence and consternation at the same time, but were was steady enough, with a particularly dull stopover at El Salvador airport.
In the meantime I gave Steinbeck a rest and went to the equally excellent 'Old Man Solo Travelogue' of The Old Patagonian Express, Paul Theroux.
The similarities in the styles of these two books are remarkable, the grizzled outlook of the well-travelled grumpy old man being brought to the fore with no concern given to offending sensitivities. This on a character he meets on his journey:
"...tightfisted people are as mean with friendship as they are with cash; suspicious, unbelieving and incurious." Love that.
More on where I am now later. Clue: it's great.
