Sipalay (Sugar Beach) 25th May - 27th May (Day 82 - 84)
After visiting Dumaguete we took a local bus south around the Negros coast road. The journey took about 7 hours, although this included a 2 hour stop for lunch. The bus itself was packed for the majority of the journey with no aircon, tiny seats and no legroom which made it a rather squashed and sweaty journey. The best aspect of the journey were the views from the bus as the coast road took us through many small villages which made for some great photos. This gave Tina the opportunity to wave excitedly to every child we drove past, to be fair most waved back and joined in and only a few of them seemed to think she was crazy.
The bus journey took us to the city of Sipalay, the final part of the journey would be a 40 minute boat ride from the beach front in Sipalay to Sugar beach across the bay. We arranged for the boat to pick us up and then walked along the beach to grab some barbequed chicken and fish to eat before the boat arrived. They also sold balut but neither of us had the courage to try it (challenge failed).
By the time we eventually got onto the boat it was dark and the weather had become stormy and we could see two lightning storms in the distance. Also once the boat was underway we realised the waves had picked up a bit. All these factors combined made for an incredibly atmospheric and exciting journey across the bay, one which will be hard to top as one of my favourite journeys during our travels.
Unfortunately we soon realised the bad weather we had was here to stay, the typhoon sweeping across the Phillipines had caught up with us. The boat took us to Driftwood Resort where we would stay for the next 3 nights. The resort itself was great, right on the beach with a lovely two story wooden restaurant area with huge tables hung from the ceiling. There was also a nice bar area with a pool table and table football. We stayed in a large beach hut with a small second floor with another bed. We also had 24hr electricity which was good although it was still cold bucket showers…which we were beginning to get used to.
The major disappointment was the weather which was overcast and windy with heavy rain for 2 days. This really stopped us enjoying the resort to its full potential. But to be fair out of all the places to be stuck during bad weather it wasn't too bad. We spent most of our time relaxing in the restaurant area, playing games, chatting to other guests and making friendship bracelets, whilst finishing off our supplies of rum and sprite (particularly Panda).
Unfortunately we didn't see the sun once but it was good fun all the same and right on cue just as we were walking along the beach to leave the sun came out and the skies cleared. This only made us more excited about reaching our next destination Apo Island.
