Hello everyone!
Well i've arrived safely in South Africa! This place is absoultely beautiful!
So I flew in yesterday morning from London, I had a tight connection in Jo'burg which made me a little nervous especially since the plane was 30 minutes late leaving London but everything worked out and I made it just as the plane was starting to board. It was pretty funny though, after i got my bag and was heading towards the domestic terminal one of the porters came up and grabbed my bag and asked where i was going and what time so i told him we only had about 20 minutes to make it there and check in so he takes off while i'm running after him. I guess he can pick out the foreigners that look a little lost. He obviously just wanted the tip but he was really helpful and it made it a lot smoother so i appreciated it.
When I arrived in Durban, a lady named Mable picked me up from the airport; she is the volunteer coordinator for the project. She is super nice! We waited at the airport for a while for another girl who was flying in and then we all drove to the wildlife center. The place is really nice, and everyone is so welcoming and friendly. There are quite a lot of animals there which is really fun. There are baboons, lots of birds, tortisses, and some other animals that i've never heard of before and yes lots of monkeys!!! there so cute i want to bring one home!
The volunteers all stay in a house on site, it is quite nice. There are 6 of us all together, 2 from Ireland, 3 from England and me! There are 3 rooms in the house so we all share and 2 bathrooms, 2 nice sitting rooms and a kitchen.
Today I woke up and looked outside and there were monkeys playing in a tree outside!! It's so strange seeing wild monkeys all around, there are also so many wild birds that are always hanging around, really pretty ones that we don't have at home. Today we just kind of got to know everyone and everthing. There are two feedings that we have to do so there is A LOT of food to prepare. Mostly fruits and veggies that we have to cut up but also.....and this is really gross.. dead baby chicks :( its really sad they come from a farm where they euthanuize them because they dont want the males and then we get them and have to chop them up for feed for some of the animals! yeah i think i'm going to pass on that job!
anyways that's all i'm going to write for now, we've got to head back. I will try and post some pictures soon!
Take Care!
