Hello Everyone!
My first week in South Africa has been amazing! I am really enjoying working at the wildlife centre, there are so many neat things to do that are truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have seriously fallen in love with all of the animals and really want to bring home a monkey!
I've been on a couple rescues, one of which was successful and we brought back a young pelican that was on a soccer field and couldn't fly. We took him to the vet who examined him. This was quite interesting to have 4 people and a pelican in a tiny room with the pelican trying to fly away!
I have also been able to help the vet with some of the things around the centre. One of which was giving a monkey physio therapy for his broken arm! weird! I know. I've helped with force feeding some of the animals who are really sick, like the pelican. So yeah, I can now saw i've stuck my hand down a pelicans throat! yummy!!
Today was perhaps one of the most entertaining days, we had to catch 4 monkeys from their enclosure because they are being released tomorow. And let me tell you, these monkeys were not impressed!!! It was quite amazing to see these two guys go in there with two big nets trying to catch these hissing monkeys who were doing anything in their power not to be caught. But in the end they were successful and no one was bitten....this time!
Last Friday me and two of the other volunteers went on a horseback riding and hiking tour which was really cool. They picked us up at 5:30 am and we drove out to the Drakensberg Mountains, which is about 2.5 hours away. The drive was really interesting, lots of things to see, lots of beautiful scenery which is all quite different from home. Some things were very eye opening, such as seeing some of the little towns and the way some people have to live which was quite humbling. We began our tour with the hourse ride through the Drakensberg Mountains which are so beautiful and very different from anything back home. After that we went for lunch at a little cafe and then went on a hike with a guide who was very entertaining and we got to see some bushmen paintings.
On Saturday we headed to the beach! The weather was beautiful and the beach was so nice! We hung out there for a while and I stuck my toes in the Indian Ocean and then went for dinner and to see a movie.
Well that's all for now!
