Well we now know where Germans, French and Scandinavians go en masse on package holidays!! Thankfully they stay in the North and we headed South West which was much more underdeveloped with lovely beaches and great walks.
Our fave place was a chilled out little pretty village called Souyia where we did the famous 16km Samaria Gorge walk and also a walks from Souyia to Lissos which had the remains of an ancient village and a pretty little bay. These walks were also very popular with the Germans and you have to admire their " get it all out there" attitude so we had an eyeful of bums, tums and boobies ( unfortunatley not very attractive) and tight lycra shorts!
We then headed to Rethyhmon which was pretty dissapointing with a very touristy harbour and mental traffic which caused some marrage tension! We visited Knossos Palace which Kate had been looking forward to seeing after reading about the legend of the Mynotaur Labyrinth. It was interesting to see how advanced their society was however the site was very crowded with the best parts taken away for museums.
We drove through Package Tour central ( think Surfers Paridise x 100) to get to a cute little seaside village called Milatos for our last night in Crete. We stayed in a little room above a Taverna with gorgeous food and the owners were the loveliest people we had met in Crete! It was here that we started our cut throat tournament of Spanish 500 which lasted for the rest of our trip in Greece...... ( yep those who have ever witnessed us play Cranium against each other can only imagine how serious the level of competition was!)
