Hi Guys
We had such a relaxing time in Croatia - as you can see from the photo, the beaches were awesome, as was just cruising on the boat every day- there is something so soothing just drifting along through the adriatic waters!!
We arrived in Split on Thursday. It was instantly such a welcome change to enjoy the warm sunny weather after being in Scotland! We stayed at a cute little studio apartment right in the city- we had a sweet (very deaf) old lady living upstairs from us (we could hear her TV and her singing along from our apartment) who would call out to us in a mixture of italian and croatian and blow kisses to us when we went out for the day from her window! Split is a fabulous place, we enjoyed wandering within the dramatic old castle walls (now the home of about 3000 people and lots of cafes, bars, & shops) Out of all the places we visted in Croatia it seemed the most authentic and least touristy. The people all dressed so beautifully and the women there are gorgeous! (take note single guys out there!!)
We then joined our boat cruise with Yani & Robbie and about 14 others for a trip along the Dalmatian Coast, stopping at harbours along the way. The coastline is so breathtaking it almost looks like a 2D backdrop scenery, the water was a gorgeous clear blue, and it was so relaxing to sit out on the deck on the boat, and go to sleep with the gentle rocking of the boat.
Getting used to a tiny cabin took a while though- lots of banging heads on bunks etc! Our chef cooked delicious Croatian cuisine (it didnt take long to get used to a 3 course lunch! we have had to train ourselves out of the habit!). We weren't allowed to bring any of our own drinks on board including water, but this just proved a fun challenge for "operation H2O" to smuggle essentials of water & vodka on board!
Our boat stopped at Maraska, Miljet, Dubrovnik, Hvar, Korcula Bol & Split. The little ports were quiet & very quaint- i think Korcula was our fave (home of Marco Polo and just such a pretty place!) We had a very special dinner in Hvar in a gorgeous restaurant with a courtyard with huge orange trees and vines growing through it (we stumbled across it when the waiter commented on Peter's Croatian singlet- great sales tactic to engage a customer!!)
Dubrovnick was so interesting, we walked along the old fortress walls and took in the spectacular views & some of the history ( it got badly bombed but has been very well restored). The inside of the old town was pretty but disappointingly full of touristy junk shops.
We swam every day and had fun practising our diving off the boat and aquatic poses in the water, and played lots of card games so it was all pretty chilled out. The food was very mediteranean (lots of pastas, great pizzas, seafood and ice-creams) which we were a bit surprised by- but I guess makes sense when you see how close it is to Italy & the Mediteranean!, so were glad to also get some more traditional croatian food on the boat at lunchtime. There were plenty of wineries everywhere, but we found Croatian wine was a pretty acquired taste which made us appreciate & miss our gorgeous aussie wines!
