Hi All,
Barcelona has been fantastic; best summarised as follows:
Highlights - the food, particularly the tapas, is awesome. Hanging out with Stu and Cate (friends from Aus) - we had the best night out on Monday, which continued with a pyjama and Rioja party back at the hotel (some great photos to come!). The Picasso musuem was brilliant and the Metro system makes it so easy to get around.
Lowlights - upon arrival we got off the bus at this huge roundabout (Place de Espagna) wich was just 100 yards from our hotel; however, we thought we were experts at interpreting Spanish, and after asking a local where the hotel is, we were so confident that he said get the Metro and get off 5 stops later! And we did....... only to have walk for ages with our backpacks, then eventually get a taxi back to where we started.
Weird and Wonderful - Everyone will give you directions, rather than say they don't know wher something is! At our hotel reception, I asked where the nearest supermarket was. He said it was 200 yards down the street on the right, yet there wasn't one there - it was across the road 30 yards away. This strange local custom resulted in some very long walks and hungry tums for us!
The best directions we got were from a very friendly garbage man at about 1am as were looking for a bar to continue drinking!
Cured meats and cheese are very popular and we have had both every day since we have been here!
