It was lovely to wake up this morning next to Blyde River over looking the canyon in our posh country lodge. There is some stunning views around here and it's definitely worth a look. But not too much of a look because we have some serious ground to cover today if we are going to make it to Sun City for dinner.
We passed some really cute towns along the way and a few really dodgy ones. The speed limits are completely ignored and I'm beginning to wonder if they are just suggested speeds. We did see a couple of police that were supposed to be operating speed cameras but the two that we passed had an officer sleeping in the front seat. We saw another cop car driving on the hard shoulder so the speeding cars could pass him easier.
There are some very interesting signs on the roads as well. One to advise you that even though you are traveling on the main highway you need to be aware of pedestrians crossing and another to warn you that the cows in the farms along the road are not fenced in and could make their way onto the road as well. THIS IS A HIGHWAY!!! A couple of my other favorites were a warning of truck wheel thefts and one that advised us we were driving in a hijacking hotspot. Comforting to know, welcome to Johannesburg. Thankfully for now we are just passing through. Thankfully as we were driving down the freeway I thought I would have a little look through our lonely planet and see on the map where we are heading and noticed, due to a little sat nav mix up, we are headed to the Botswana boarder. While I'm sure Botswana is lovely this time of year it was not really on the itinerary so a quick stop into the nearest place that we can pull over to consult a map and and reprogram the sat nav and we are back on course.
Our Hotel is about 20k's from Sun City but it's as close as we could get when we were booking. It was a very good choice though. Our room is huge with a massive bathroom. So it's a quick shower and change into our Saturday night best and it's off to Sun City to win our fortune.
We arrive at the massive car park and jumped on the bus to take us to the casino. The bus dropped us at the welcome centre and we stood at the entrance wondering where to from here. We looked at a map of the place and thought we knew where we were heading so it's back onto another bus and off to a different section. Nope this is just accommodation. Back onto a different bus and a walk through the welcome centre which looks likes it's just a kids entertainment center with loads of video games. Not what we were after. It's back on the bus and this time we're heading to a different section. Woohoo, we finally found the casino. It's so much smaller than we expected. Juniors club is bigger. But where is the fantastic buffet we have heard about? We booked into one of the restaurants but the buffet wasn't worth the fuss. We don't know where those amazing buffets they showed on getaway are. That must just be for the people staying in the expensive hotel. We certainly didn't see anything remotely similar to what was shown on the show.
Unfortunately Sun City was not worth the big drive we had just done to get here. Elstub even said that Seals was better. The place is really disjointed and it's too hard to get from one point to another. We were originally planning to spend tomorrow morning here as well but we will give that a miss now. Lucky for us our room is lovely and there is a day spa here. It's been a while since we had a massage. We have also just realised we have a flat tyre so it's going to take some time to sweet talk someone into change that for us before we head off to the airport.
Maybe we won't be able to make our flight and have to stay a bit longer.
Oh, shame.
