Today is going to be all about the big cats. Well that's the plan anyway.
We checked out of our little hut at Skukuza and started on our trek to the next rest camp Satara. Just down the road and not to far into our trip we spotted some cute little monkeys playing on the road. Their not very photogenic though because as soon as you pull out the camera they turn their face away. I did manage to get a couple of snaps away.
The time seems to fly by driving through here and before you know it a couple of hours have passed and your busting to go to the toilet and there is nowhere in sight. It's not like you can hop out of your car here for a sneaky little roadside bathroom break. With both of us squirming in our seats and the next picnic spot (which we weren't even sure had toilet facilities) 19k's away, there was a lot of nervous giggling in the car and not a lot of animal spotting happening. Thankfully, for future reference, picnic spots in Kruger do have bathrooms. That taken care of it's back to animal spotting.
In our travels today we saw water buffalo, wilder beast, a few different bucks and another leopard. We took to long way round to get to Satara and arrived here around 2:30. It seemed the big cats didn't know that today was all about them because except for the leopard we spotted they weren't out and about. We were booked for a sunset safari at 4:30 so we still had time.
We went out to meet our safari truck at 4:15 and there are loads of people. They load half of the group into one bus and then we see them push starting a second bus. They do a couple of laps in the second truck and then bring it around to us. The driver informs us that they have been having issues with the battery of the second truck and have been awaiting the arrival of a new one but since they have overbooked the sunset safari they will have to use it but not to worry, if it breaks down during our trip he will radio a smaller bus and he will come and get us and bring us back in smaller groups. Sounds perfectly reasonable in a park full of lions and leopards and rhinos. Guess which bus we were on. Every time he turned off the engine to talk to us about whatever animal we had come across we would hold our breath until he was able to start it again. Very stressful!!
Unfortunately no big cats crossed our path tonight. The people in our group tonight were the exact opposite of the last safari drive we were on. These guys did not miss an animal. I'm sure they would've had us stop for a flea jumping in the dirt if there had've been one. Maybe tomorrow must be the day of the big cats. We live in hope.
Weather report - today was sunshine and 29. Shorts and flip flop weather today. Tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same so we are even bringing out the singlet tops.
