Just to reassure you, I was not killed by that earthquake in China. Because I'm not in China...
Sorry for not writing for a bit, I've been quite lazy. Well, busy. Both...
Its been an interesting 2 weeks - I somehow managed to put a staple through my finger and had some great times experiencing Vietnamese karaoke, its all the rage here. They have these huge karaoke clubs with multiple floors, with these massive karaoke rooms, that can fit like 30-40 people. Huge selection of songs too, everything from Nirvana to The Beatles and Bon Jovi. Pretty much any English classic song will be there. They mic warps your voice a bit, so almost anyone will sound like they can sing. And the score you get at the end of the sing is almost certainly rigged. You can sing the wrong words, completely out of time, and still get 85 or something, but then sometimes when you feel that you aced it, the thing gives you a 70...
I went out yesterday and got myself a new pair of glasses.... for like $20. Its ridiculously cheap. And they are every bit as good as the ones I got back home for like $400+. So for anyone who is looking for a snazzy pair of specs, Nam is the place to go. Tattoos are the next thing I'm gonna look at...
The jobs are doing swell. Last week we had a blast playing the 'body parts touching game', which is every bit as suss as it sounds. You get a stack of body-parts flashcards, like 'tongue', 'knee', 'bottom' and so on, and make 2 people choose a random card withouth looking. Then they have to touch the 2 parts together. Like 'teeth' and 'bottom'. And someone tried to discreetly add a 'penis' card to the stack. Little buggars. I played it with an extended Vietnamese family in their house, with about 20 people, kids, teens and adults (they are my private class, I teach there 3 nights a week). They went wild, it was the best hour of 'teaching' I've done. They're a great bunch to teach, before that I was teaching them the meaning of the middle finger, and how to say penis (just the adults mind you). And poo IN the toilet, not ON the toilet, with diagrams. They loved it.
And for my fellow countrymen back in the land of Oz, you HAVE to try jelly bubble tea. Its the next big thing, seriously. It started in Taiwan and is sweeping its way across Asia. Its pretty big in Saigon with high school and university students. Its not really tea, its more like a milkshake with ice and little balls of jelly in it with a tonne of different flavours to choose from. You drink it through a massive straw. And its mad fun to shoot the jelly balls with the straw. I'm gonna use it to teach my kids numbers by lining them up against the wall and shooting them with jelly. I'm sure you could find some in Sydney. Its a must. Although I can get mine for less than a dollar here, but I'm guessing you guys will have to pay a few bucks for one. But seriously, its worth it. You'll be hooked.
And now I must have my lunch. Doner kebabs for a dollar. Yippee.
Taynos out.
