Week 4 in dubai and the hardest part of school is over. We all passed General Medical Training with flying colours. Its unbelievable what we carry on board and what they train us for.
I'm now able to deliver a baby, give an injection to someone having anaphalactic shock, handle angina/ heart/ asmtha attack, diabetic and epilepsy, know what to do with a death on board! Emirates has a phone on board so if someone gets sick we can reach a call centre full of doctors who will talk us through what to do, its pretty amazing. There is also a computer which we can hook the patient up to on ECG, blood pressure and stuff, very advanced! If the plane has to divert it can cost the airline hundreds of thousands so they want to do everything possible to avoid that. The reason there is so many babies are born on board is coz our policy is that you can fly up to 36 weeks as long as you are fit to fly. In UAE its illegal to have a baby out of wedlock - you literally get put in jail - so if it happens they have to fly to their home country to get an abortion (or leave) and some of them just don't realise they can't fly when they are nearly due, so I think we've had 13 births! Twins last year!!!
I'm getting excited about finding out my rosta, the guys in the week ahead of us got theirs the other day so I should find out soon. My flat mates have capetown, Birmingham, Bangkok - Sydney, Moscow, manilla and holiday between the 2 of them!
Yesterday we all went on the open top bus tour and covered all of dubai, was nice to see the real older city and the souks and get some culture! I got 2 pashminis, one gold and one black one for £4 so if anyone wants one let me know they have every colour!!!
So the story behind Dubai is that Sheikh Aqmed bin saeed al Maktoum and his family decided 30 yrs ago that they would build dubai as a tourist destination as they knew the oil would run out by 2020. we have 17% of the worlds cranes in dubai and there are 5000 construction projects going on right now. Its expected that 15 million tourists will arrive next year and the largest hotel in the world with 6000 rooms is being built. The Mall of Arabia will be complete this year, its round the corner from my flat and will be 1km square!!! The Maktoum family encourages UAE nationals to marry each other to keep it as an Arabic State as its already on 20% Arabic citizens, so to give them incentive the Sheikh gives them a house on the coast, and 70,000 Dirhams (£10,000) as a gift, and half that again for marrying their second wife!!! That's why only UAE nationals are allowed to invest in property over here unless its on the World development.
Right, am going to head to the gym now then either the beach or pool, getting started on my sun tan this weekend so when I come home I don't still look anaemic!
