Hey guys! Hope all is well!
So it has been a month since I left so I figured I'd better post a blog of my adventures so far.
After leaving Melbourne on the 28th of May I had a fourteen hour flight ahead of me to LA. We all know LA is famous for celebrities so who shall I find myself in the customs line behind: Hamish and Andy!!! I then boarded another plane to Chicago and another one from there to Asheville. After twenty hours of flying I then had a windy hour and a half drive to my home for the next 11 weeks: Camp Merrie-Woode in North Carolina.
My initial thoughts of America were A. Lots of black people in LA. B. Everyone says 'sup' to you and C. The driving on the other side of the road freaked me out.
I've now been at camp for four weeks and am having so much fun, making many new friends and learning so much new stuff! I teach land sports and stained glass which is also pretty fun. For three weeks I was in charge of a cabin of four girls, all aged twelve. They left yesterday and so I get new kids tomorrow. Though challenging at times, especially getting them to go to bed, I learnt a lot of things about kids and had a ball with them. In return they had a ball with me, often picking on my accent and yelling at me when I said the Australian word compared to the American way. Common words which I would get yelled at for saying include:
Thongs = flip flops
Jumper = sweat shirt
Singlet = tank top
Trackies = sweat pants
Rubbish = trash
You's = y'all
Bathers = swim suit
Runners = tennis shoes or trainers
Drink bottle= water bottle
Capsican= red or green pepper
Medical centre= infirmary
Sunnies= sunglasses
There's a lot more but this is all I remember. I'm not looking forward to new kids coming as it means every object they can see around them they will ask me: "how do you say this? How do you say that? What about this?" It's so annoying as majority of the time it's in fact the same.
The food at camp isn't bad. We get desert after every lunch and dinner which is so delicious but also very bad for me. It's okay though because they have a gym which I use, I also do a lot of hiking and kayaking and playing sport with kids all day does get quite tiring!
The weather is pretty good also. There's lots of sun and I'm getting an awesome tan!! However I have a really bad watch mark. It also tends to thunderstorm some afternoons which cools things down. The thunderstorms are crazy!!! One minute it's sunny and then you hear thunder and then the next minute it's pouring down and everyones running for cover!
There's only one bad thing about camp which I can think of and that's the animals! Spiders in particular! They're everywhere! Especially daddy long legs! And the daddy long legs here are not like ours. They're about five times bigger and are brown and like to attack you while your in the shower which is never fun! They also have snakes around camp (copper heads in particular), bumble bees which are HUGE! Also hornets and let's not forget to mention bears! One came in to camp the other night and was going through the trash cans! On the flip side though they also have a lot of cute animals too like squirrels and chip munks, snapping turtles and they even have fire flies!
So these are my adventures so far! Hope you enjoyed reading! I'm sure there will be a lot more to come :)
