Goodbye Atlantic City, hello Boston!!! Famous for the Boston Red Sox and also the birthplace of Benjamin Franklin, we've found it's a very historic place with a good atmosphere. Our first day we took a guided tour of Boston along the famous freedom trail. Our guide, dressed from the 17th century, took us through the streets to all the famous historic buildings and sites, along the way giving interesting information about Boston's past and present. To be honest I knew nothing about Boston or what it had to offer, but I must say I was impressed with the city and by its historical past. My favourite part was learning that where there used to be the weekly hangings for people who had committed crimes, a playground has now been plonked there. I also learnt that Paul Revere, seen as a hero through the revolutionary war period for warning the Boston townspeople that "the British are coming!" was actually drunk that night and never even said that. That afternoon seeing we'd done so much walking, we decided to rest our feet so we went to the cinemas and saw "crazy, stupid, love." Funny, funny movie! Highly recommended!
The next day we decided to head to the USS Charlestown Naval Yard, the third oldest naval yard. We got a guided tour of a retired WW2 destroyer, 'The Cassin Young.' Unfortunately we couldn't go on another popular ship, 'The Constitution' as a graduate ceremony was going on for the new navy recruits. We then hopped on a train (we have become pro's at public transport in Boston) and headed to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Redsocks. Would have loved to go to a baseball game but none were on when we were here :( Our next stop was 'cheers.' A famous bar and set for the sitcom cheers. I had never heard of the show therefore it had zero meaning to me.
Our third day in Boston we caught the train out to Harvard University. We met up with other Melbourne people and did a self guided tour. I was shattered to learn that Legally Blonde wasn't even filmed there! I was impressed though to learn that they have the second biggest library in the USA, The first being the Library of Congress. Harvard was not allowed to build the library bigger than three stories so instead they built six stories underground. I was keen to find my future husband but unfortunately that didn't happen so instead we moved onto MIT. It wasn't as pretty has Harvard, in terms of the campus and boys that went there. I also realized it was actually really small. We then decided to move onto shopping. We went to Prudential towers, a shopping mall which we discovered was all high end shops and not in our budget so we moved onto downtown crossing. A bit better there. I also got my hair cut. BAD MISTAKE!!!! I told him how much I wanted off and he did about four times more then what I said, therefore it is very short. Not happy!!! Oh there was also an earthquake today in Virginia but I actually didn't feel a thing! Apparently people in Boston felt it though, so I'm not quite sure where or what we were doing when it hit. Speaking of natural disasters, there's now a hurricane warning issued for the east coast. Yayy! I may not have felt the earth quake but I think it'll be a lot cooler if I get to experience a real live hurricane!
Our forth and last day in Boston we caught a ferry to Salem, the town known for the Salem witch trials in 1692. The town is themed around witches, with like every shop having a witch in the window or something. It was pretty crazy. We also went to a witch museum where we learnt all about the witch trials and how the people accused couldn't even defend themselves, therefore were hanged.
Overall it was a nice way to end our time in Boston. I've had a lot of fun and learnt heaps in this amazing city, however I don't think anymore time here was needed as we pretty much got through everything possible to see here. Next stop New York!!!
