Greetings from Barberton South Africa!! Let me just stop you there befre you get excited that this picture was taken by moa - it wasn't, but I am working on it! I'm not sure how many pictures you'll get to see as the library where I always use the internet, and one of only 2 places where I can, doesn't allow you to plug in USB (thats a cable which allows you to put your pictures on the computer Mum and Nan!) It sucks and I'll try and find a way around it as I still have my last pictures from Ghana to upload, these are of special importance as I spent so much time sunbathing and therefore am very brown! I do have some from here as well but the tan is fading way too quickly for my liking...!
So my last week in Ghana was spent in the capital, Accra. It was very different from my previous two weeks spent on the beach as it's SO busy and hectic plus it's huge so you never really have much of an idea where you are! Veronica and I arrived on Monday and found our way to the Salvation Army hostel - Harold Bishop eat your heart out!! They even had a Salvo Army brass band - classic. Monday evenign we went out for V's last night, walked all teh way to this pizza restaurant which is supposed to be fab and then got there to find out it was shut. Found a great chinese though so happy faces (and bellies) all round! We returned to the Salvo after having gone for a few drinks and the security guard greeted us with a very confused face - the next day I realised why we were supposed to be in our room by 10.30pm so no wonder he looked at us strange at 12.45 oops!
Tuesday was Veronica's last day which sucked, actually th day was fab but it sucked that she was leaving. We managed to pur chase ourselves some very ncie leather bags - I know how practical of me, by a really nice leather bag just before you come to South Africa and 1 - have to carry it and 2 - can't really use it here! Ghanaian logic definitely rubbed off on me a little too much! We went for a nice lunch - mandatory as we spent pretty much every waking minute talking about food and either what we had just eaten, were going to eat or wanted to eat!! Took V to the airport in the evening and once again shed a tear, well ok loads but Jess was there to mop them up for me! I know it's the nature of things like this but its really is s*** (sorry Nan) when people leave, especally when they're the people that you like the most and have spent the most time with - that's you Veronic!
Anyway the big adventure must go on, after an egg sandwich and a Club beer that is! Wednesday and Thursday I went to The Statesman newspaper with Jess. It's a national newspaper in Ghana and where she spent the last month of her placement. I just wnated to see hwo things worked really and maybe help her with something... we ended up doing vox pops of local people and their opinions on the African Union (25th May was Afrcian Unity day) as well as a whole article on the Arican Union! Don't worry, Jess has a copy of the newspaper for me so I'll be sure to make you all read it, well at least look at it! Thurday evening we went to Mamma Mia's - the pizza place that we didn't manage to go to on Monday eve. Soem of the peoepl from Cape Coast came which was really good, nice to see them again. The pizza was def worth the wait - Jess and I even splashed out and had white wine! I know, wow big deal white wine but it actually is in Ghana as you don't really get it and when you do it's a lot more expensive than the 50p beer!! It was really bizarre as I had to keep reminding myself that it was my last night, just didn't seem real. We went for a few drinks after and then I returned to the Salvo for my last blank look from the security guard - 12.45 again!! Oops!
Frdiay was my last day so I packed my case, sorry rucksack, and then Jess and I planned to go to the beach but the beach in Accra was rank so we opted for a nice pain au chocolat and a massive ice cream - oh yes! Get in my belly! It's really bad I felt like the last 3 weeks in Ghana all I did was eat as I kept thinking of well I'm leaving soon, but actually I wasn't leavign to go home and eat normally again but leaving to go to South Africa and be able to eat all the foods I've been craving, oops again! Never mind, my excuse is that you can't get dough balls in SA or at home...
Got to the airport in the evening, checked in my bag (nearly had a heat atack as teh scales said 36 kilos but then realised someone else's bag was still on there too, phew!) Had plenty of time to spare so went for a coffee with Jess and said goodbye to her (more tears of course) then thought I was actually going to miss my flight as it took so long to go through departures!
Tiem up on the net so I'll tell you about my Ghanaian logic in duty free very soon.....
