So this will probably be my penultimate blog entry - very strange thought but then I have been slacking a lot recently, can't be helped when there's SO much else to do!
So Tom and I went to Port St Johns for 2 nights - it is possibly one of the funniest places I have ever visited, mostly due to the fact that almost every single person (actually maybe everyone...) is a hippy or a complete pot head! They are all exactly like something out of Pirates of the Carribean with long matted hair and weird little beards! It was a nice place though with a nice beach that we sunbathed on even when it was freezing, I of course refused to not lay there in my bikini even though it was really cold, I had to try and attempt to get a tan!Otherwise when I get back you'll all think I haven't been in Africa for 7 months! It was a nice place to chill out - some of the locals were so laid back it was unbelievable so it was actually quite nice to leave there and get somewhere with people that don't use the elongated version of the word 'maaann' all the bloody time!
Next stop was Port Elizabeth where we just had to stay over night.I can't comment on PE as we got there at 11.30 in the evening and left at 6.30 so all we saw was the inside of one backpackers!!We did have a good laugh with 3 English girls we met on the Baz Bus though. We then left for Jeffery's Bay which is surfers paradise = lots of hot guys!!!!All myself and Tom did really was sunbathe and completely chill out for both of the days, I didn't fancy trying my hand at surfing....It was a really nice place though and definitely the first time I had felt completely safe walking around later in the evening - very unlike Durban.
So, all tanned up next stop for me was Plettenberg Bay and Storms River for Tom.On the bus I met back up with the English girls we met on the way to PE (SA loves it abbreviations!) which was really good as they're such nice girls. The backpackers here was brilliant - they had hairdryers in the room!!!Funny how quickly you get used to not doing your hair and not putting on any make up!We had a wander around the town in the arvo and found the lookout point which was really nice so we sat outside in a restaurant - until it started to rain! Then we had to go inside and have a few cocktails, to keep warm or course! In the evening we went to a lovely seafood restaurant and stocked up on calamari, salmon etc etc.Next stop was the Flashbacks bar - it was as bad as it sounds!Fairly early to bed though ready for our skydive's the next day... the next day happened to be cloudy and raining again so no skydives, instead we went on an ocean safari to see whales and dolphins which was exactly what we saw - southern right whales and bottlenose dolphins!!Absolutely brilliant to see and really really close. The dolphins definitely won though as the southern right whales have these weird crustations on their heads which means the dolphins are SO much cuter! That evening, what with the rain, there was nothing else to do but check out another restaurant and a different bar - this bar happened to be showing Cocktail on big screen with the sound off, we soon changed that!Basically had our own private screening, even had a red eye!
Next day, Thursday, was time to go down to Mossel Bay.This place was ok but the main reason I wanted to stay there was to stay in this train they have that is stationary on the beach.Unfortunately this train burned down a few days before so I ended up staying elsewhere.I am actually quite glad I changed back packers though because where I ended up staying was a beautiful old Victorian house with really nice gardens, wooden floors everywhere etc etc.Definitely the most beautiful backpackers I have ever seen, why somebody would use it a one is beyond me!Stayed one night there with an English girl and two Dutch which was nice, had my first Cuban meal which was also very nice.
Friday meant it was time to leave and make my way to Hermanus for Saturday's great white shark cage diving and meeting back up with Sile. Met back up with Tom on the Baz Bus, always nice to see a familiar face.Arrived in Hermanus and thought we would go for a few quite drinks, famous last words? Met Sile and her friend Anne which was really nice but then for some very silly reason we thought we'd go to a club until nearly 5am - not one of us thought at anytime that this could be a bad idea due to the fact that we were all doing cage diving the next day!!!Got up the next day and went for our cage diving which was fine until you go out a certain way on the boat and then they stop to wait for the sharks to come, this means you're just bobbing around in the water?. = quite a few people not feeling well!!One guy was even sick in the cage - luckily for us he wasn't in our group!Anyway the sharks arrived and then it's showtime, you go down in small groups so we had to wait our turn but it was amazing even from the boat as the sharks come right up to the edge of the boat and the cage as the guys bait them in that direction. When it was our turn it was SO SO SO good to go underwater and then see the sharks come right towards you - definitely forget about your hangover then!!It was really surprising though, we all expected the sharks to be much more aggressive and almost trying to get through the cage to eat us but they actually could not have cared less that we were there! They weren't even really interested in the fish bait.It was such a great experience and I'm so glad I've done it as I'm pretty sure it'll get banned fairly soon due to the conservationist idea of it attracting sharks to humans.
After Hermanus came the mother city of Cape Town!!!Arrived on the Saturday evening and just chilled in the hostel.Sunday Sile and I went down to Camps Bay which is a really nice beach, unfortunately it started raining so it was time for more cocktails in the nearby bar - shame!Ha, me writing 'shame' reminds me of how here they say shame for everything and it's not meant sarcastically at all.You could say someone has just died or you have a fatal illness and they'll just say shame, don't think I'll try that at home, may get a slap!Sunday evening was time to experience Long Street night life - had a brilliant night.Few Jaggers, good music, bit of a dance, what more can you ask!!
Monday was time for a wander round the V&A Waterfront which is beautiful and hen the Robben Island tour which to be honest was fairly disappointing. The most annoying thing was that they drive you around the island in a bus and we had a tour guide who would not shut up for even one minute! Then we walked around the prison but you couldn't see Nelson Mandela's cell or any of the individual cells as they are currently being renovated - not sure of the authenticity of a museum like cell that's been renovated? There also wasn't any sort of museum or anything to add to what is basically an empty island with a few empty buildings.Anyway the two highlights of the tour were getting to take pictures from the island with Table Mountain in the background and then funniest thing of the whole tour, even though it is highly juvenile was that our guide got pooed on by a bird!!I know, I know, stupid but very funny at the time.
Tuesday = Cape wine tour!!This involves getting picked up at 9am and then being taken to the vineyard regions of Stellenbosch and Paarl. It then involves your first glass of champagne at 10am followed by numerous red and white wine tasting sessions through out the day.Of course there is a bit of info about how to tell a good wine, what to look for, smell etc.The wine tour finished at 4.30 then we all went for cocktails and then out I the evening to a karaoke bar - you can imagine how good we all were at this stage!Luckily for everyone I opted out of the singing, not sure if it was entirely through choice though?
Wednesday was pretty much a wash out, we just chilled out in the hostel, except Sile who had to fly home?!
Thursday Tom and I climbed Table Mountain which I honestly thought was going to be a little stroll in the park as a far few people I've spoken to have climbed it.It definitely wasn't a stroll in the park, well unless the park you're thinking about involves 2 hours of really good hiking up boulders and steep rocks.I did survive though and managed to get to the top for a well deserved bottle of powerade!!It was a cloudy day so we couldn't see much from the top but it was well worth walking up as you walked through the clouds which was really cool, one minute you turned around and you could see Cape Town behind you then the next it had disappeared and all you could see were white clouds. We did get the cable car down though.
In the past god knows how many months I haven't been to the cinema once and then within less than 24 hours I went twice! That was once I discovered how cheap it was - it's less than 2 pounds to go the cinema here and see a brand new movie!!Today I've just chilled out as the weather is rubbish at the moment, I really want to work on my tan but not sure how likely it is? that means please don't mention it when you see me next!!If you've managed to get to the end of this, well done, it was a long one!!!I promise there will only be one more and then I'll be home to bore you with all the stories in person?..until then xx
