Another early start so we could get to the Ancient city of Troy nice and early before all the tourists got there. Our tour guide told us not to expect too much from Troy as it was a few wall ruins and 4000 yr old red bricks. Rightfully so it wasn't hugely exciting although after studying Troy in ancient history as a HSC subject it had a little more meaning to me.
Getting to see the ruins of an ancient city and see where Heinrich Schlimann who I studied in high school excavated and rediscovered Troy. From the evidence recovered there had been settlement in Troy from 3000 BC until 400 AD in nine different layers each established on the previous layer.
There was a huge wooden horse that we all got photos in for a bit of a laugh, guess they had to have something at Troy that everyone associates with.
After lunch we stopped at Asklepion which was a famous ancient hospital. Stepping out into 35 degrees was a bit uncomfortable because there wasnt much shade. Our tour guide explained the people that would visit this place were mostly mentally ill or athletes. Remedies included standing in a pitch black tunnel and listening to running water while someone chants you will be well. There was also an amphitheater so the patients could be entertained and happy as well as massages and honey were also used as healing tools.
Back on the bus to get to our new hotel where we all jumped straight in,then relaxed with cold beers around the pool before dinner. Finally we got to eat dinner outside and it was a beautiful night the sunset was awesome. Lots of cold vego starters which were great, tempura eggplant and stuffed capsicum were definitely the winner.
After dinner we were all excited because our tour guide and booked out a local Turkish bath for us. I am officially in love with Turkish baths! You go in to a big room with a dome top, that has lots of showers and huge marble table in the center that is heated underneath by fire so it is very warm when you lie on it. So while we were waiting for some sexy old guy with a big belly, hairy chest and only a towel around his waist to exfoliate us you lie on this hot marble.
When it's your turn they have this mitt on and they crack your back and exfoliate you all over so all this dead skin comes off. Then a shower and over to another man who washes you with this foamy olive oil soap that is in this white blown up bag and it gets rubbed all over you then they wash you down with a big tub of water. And you get wrapped in a a towel around your waist, one around your shoulders and one around your head and go out and relax with apple tea.
I was definitely feeling relaxed, clean and ready for bed!
Off to ancient city tomorrow, before we drop half our tour off on a boat and we continue down the coast.
Over and out xx
