With an early start and a 5 hr drive it was a relief to get to Gallipoli and see it was well worth it. We went straight to the heart of where the action began for the Anzacs in 1915 at Anzac cove.
The sight was beautiful, and overwhelming to know that almost 100 years ago there was so much bloodshed right where I stood.
Further down the beach we walked around an Anzac cemetery which over looked the water, headstones were put in this area to honor soldiers that were believed to have died there.
Further down the road we visited another small cemetery which had J.Simpson's headstone who with his donkey was famous for going into the battle field to rescue injured men.
We then went up to Lone pine Anzac memorial where we were shown the youngest registered soldiers headstone(the youngest unregistered was believed to be 14). This memorial stood up higher so you could see all along down the coast. We also visited the Turkish memorial which was right up the top of the hill and had some trenches that had been reconstructed but were where the original ones were so that was pretty exciting to see some real trenches, they were so shallow hard to imagine men using them for protection .
Jumped back on the bus to get the 5.00 pm ferry but when we got there it was already full so we went for a cold beer in a local shop while we waited for the next one. Finally we could cross so we said farewell to the Europe turkey and hello to the Asian turkey.
We arrived at our 5 star hotel (loving life) and everyone quickly dumped there bags in their rooms do we could cool off in the pool before dinner. Dinner was buffet,so much food! Then off to bed for another early morning to get to the ancient city of Troy.
Having a great time, turkey is lovely but managed to get a terrible sunburn today I was wearing a singlet :( have to fix that up on the boat in greece.
Over and out xx
