Final holiday destination reached! After a train trip, and two buses and a long walk (total time 7+ hours) I arrived at the Slipway Hotel in Port Isaac, on the North Cornish coast. Reason for this location- the TV series Doc Martin. I am an unashamed fan as are apparently a large number of others-mostly from the UK!
This village is perched on the cliff-especially the oldest part which is where the series is set. I have heard that the locals are sick of the publicity and certainly they have found a need to 'chain off' Doc Martin's TV home with a big 'PRIVATE' sign (not that that has stopped some tourists who step over the chain to have their photo taken by the door-not me I might add)!!
The village has a much older history than Doc Martin of course and dates way back into the 15th Century in some buildings. The main activity has been fishing and I think from the menu selection that this is still very much in operation if tourism hasnt taken over. By lunch time each day I have been here the village is full of tourists.
Today I went on a walk around the town with my guide book. Some of the houses are tucked into tiny corners and alleys-it is so fascinating to explore! This village also boasts the narrowest thoroughfare in the world according to the Guiness Book of records. Squeezee Belly alley (see photos) is 18" at its narrowest width. I discovered many wonderful bed and breakfasts and cottages to let for a further visit down the track.
I also went for a cliff top walk to a place called Varley Head which was amazingly beautiful and rugged- a bit slippery in spots and muddy but I made it back!! Tried out my new thermos which ws very successful-afternoon tea on a secluded piece of cliff with grass and flowers and endless ocean view. My last walk in the UK!!
I leave tomorrow for London and then home.
