Blog 22
Hello everyone! Hope you're all well. We've been having a pretty good time since our last blog. I've been pretty tired because I've been working so much but it's all money at the end of the day so it's worth it. We've had a few more quiet evenings this week. We've watched a couple of dvd's and been to the pub but not too many late nights.
In the evening after James wrote the last blog we went for a bike ride to Ricey's beach to watch the sunset. We saw loads of crabs which had one claw bigger than the other scurrying from the sand dunes back down towards the water and burrowing holes into the sand. We had thought about going for a swim but seeing so many crabs put us off! James borrowed a friends bike for the ride but as we left the beach we noticed it had a really bad puncture so we had to walk all the way back. We were about 4.5 km from our house and the sun had already set so it was pitch black. It took us nearly an hour and a half to get back when it would normally be a 15 minute cycle. We weren't too bothered. It was a nice walk back even though I was scared that snakes were going to crawl out and get me.
I was on opening shifts all last week which meant I had all the afternoons free. On Monday James had a split shift so I just spent the afternoon with some friends. On Tuesday we had a lazy afternoon and just chilled out then we went to the movies in the evening with Lilly and Dani and saw 'Death at a Funeral'. It was a funny film. I enjoyed it more than James though. After the movies James, Helen and I went to the pub for a couple of drinks and had a good chat about our travels. We're all really excited now.
The next day (Wednesday) James and I were meant to be on a close together at work but at 6.15am Nat came in and asked if I could work for him because he was really ill. I later found out he just had a hangover! I managed to finish work at 11am so I could spend a bit of time with James before he started work at 1pm. In the afternoon I went to the beach with Dani and Erik and had a nice swim until I got stung by jellies. They weren't too bad. The stings looked worse than they felt.
Jelly fish were the least of my worries anyway as a few days a go a 4 metre shark was sighted a few times just in the bay where we always swim and jump off the jetty. Later on in the day I went up to Helen's for a bit to give her some company as she was pretty ill. We just watched tv for hours.
When James finished work we went to the pub with Dani, Lilly, Nikki and a few others. It was a really good night. A late one though as when we'd finished at the pub we went to Nikki and Lilly's house for another couple of hours. I spent most of Thursday afternoon after work sleeping.
We both had our 2 days off last week. James had Friday and Saturday and I had Saturday and Sunday. On Friday morning James went over to Mainland with Dani and met up with Jenna in Freo. I managed to finish work early so caught the 2.30 ferry over to mainland and met up with James, Jenna and Dani. We went up to Ikea so James and I could get a new mattress and pillows for the van. We found some good mattresses in the showroom but they had none in stock. We took Jenna and Dani back down to Freo so they could get the ferry over to Rotto. I then drove us in to Perth and we had a wonder round the shops because they have late night shopping on a Friday and we watched some of the Perth entertainment. It has a really good vibe over there at night. When we were done we headed up to Scarborough and spent the night there.
We had a pretty busy but good day on Saturday. We spent the morning shopping, getting new bits for the van. We went up to Ikea again to see if they had the mattress in stock yet but we had no luck. We got some good storage boxes though and had Swedish meatballs for an early lunch. We then went to a few other shops and managed to get a tent for when Helen's travelling with us, a rechargeable light and eventually a mattress after going to about 10 bed shops and driving across to the other side of Perth. It's all coming together well now.
After getting all the bits for the van we went in to Freo and went to a surf shop there and we picked up a new board. It's similar to the one we already have but a bit longer and a bit wider which will suit both of our styles a little better. Mau from work is buying our old board off us.
We then headed back to Scarborough and tidied up the van and James did a bit of DIY on the new board as it had a few dings which needed repairing. Whilst I rung my mum James went in for a surf to check out the new board. He said it rides pretty well. I'm looking forward to using it.
In the evening we went for a little walk, went to the pub then got a really nice take away pizza for tea.
Yesterday morning we went in to Freo and checked our e-mails. We didn't get time to do the blog as we needed to get the 10.00 ferry back to Rottnest for James to be in work at 12pm. When we got back we had breakfast then James rushed into work. I had a pretty lazy afternoon. I went up to Nikki's house for a couple of hours then just tidied up our room.
I spent the evening with Helen at the pub then James came down when he'd finished work. We had a pretty early night ready for our final week in work. We only have 5 more days working then hopefully we won't need to work until we get to Sydney or Brisbane and even then it should only be for a week or 2.
The next few months are going to go very fast. We have so many exciting things to look forward to. My mum gets here on Sunday and we have a lot of exciting things planned for her visit then on the 30th March we're picking Helen up from Rottnest then beginning our travelling over east. We're going via Kalgoorlie then across the Nullabor desert to Adelaide, along the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne then we're going to the Blue Mountains, Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and up to Cairns. It's going to be an amazing trip!
Sorry I can't put any photos up today but I'll definitely do some on Saturday as I've got quite a collection of them building up. Currently I have 1442 photos from Australia! I'm sure I'll accumulate even more over the next 3 months!
Hope you are all very well and looking forward to the summer coming around. The weather is much more pleasant here now. The temperature most days at the moment is around 25oC which is much more bearable than the 38oC days we had been having constantly.
We'll speak to you soon, take care
Lots of love Laura and James xXx
