Hi to all fans of our blog, hope you've all had a good week. We have. We haven't done very much aside from working; we've spent a lot of time catching up on sleep after lots of late nights last week.
We were off on Thursday so had a pretty chilled out day on the island. We went for a bike ride then in the afternoon we went out on the Underwater Explorer boat trip with some money I got for my birthday. It was really good. We saw loads of big fish, a few jellies and 2 ship wrecks which are about 100 years old. One is the Denton Holme and the other, the Macedon. The ship wrecks are right next to each other and only happened a couple of years apart. The Denton Holme was heading to Perth from Glasgow with lots of steal pipes to build Perth's water works when it hit the reef and sunk. The Macedon was heading from Fremantle up the coast to set up a new village but it took a detour past Rottnest Island to give supplies to the island. They hit the reef and damaged the boat but managed to repair it then only a couple on hundred meters ahead they hit the reef again and the boat began to fill with water. This was because the night before there had been a storm and the buoy marking the reef had become loose. The Macedon deployed it life rafts but they were not seaworthy so they had to wait for a rescue boat. All the crew and 40 horses on board were safe. The ship wrecks are still very clear. It was a really interesting trip.
On Thursday evening James and I were planning to go for a meal for Valentines day but a few of friends ended up coming too. It was a really nice evening, we had lots of laughs.
Okie and Lilly have made up some Big Brother style questions for the house and have been interviewing and videoing people answering them which has been fun.
The weekend was really busy in work because the Rottnest Channel Swim was on. It's an annual event where around 2000 people swim from Cottesloe (beach near Perth) to Rottnest Island. There were around 10,000 extra people on the island so we were attacked all day Saturday and Sunday. There were a lot of staff on though so it didn't feel too bad.
My bike is fixed now; James did it for me the other day (thanks James!) There was a spare tyre at the house so he fitted that and got a new inner tube. We rode up to Oliver Hill on Thursday. The views are so good up there. Yesterday was a fairly cool day and it was extremely windy so it was really refreshing.
On Thursday evening we all went to Gov's bar on the island. It was karaoke night and Okie really got in to it along with a few others. He'd been practicing in the kitchen for days.
Haven't really got any more news. I was off yesterday and today and James is off today and tomorrow. We stayed on mainland last night at Scarborough and are heading back over to Rottnest this afternoon. Time is going so fast, can't believe we only have 3 weeks left on Rottnest and only 5 weeks until we go over East.
Hope you're all well.
Lots of love, Laura and James xXx
