Hey all, James here. Been a while since I put my hands to the blog so thought I'd better take a turn. It's not been long since the last blog but the next chance we'll get after today will probably be a week on Saturday so we thought we'd better make an addition.
I was pretty happy to have last weekend off, it was apparently really busy at work, and it was Okie's last full day on the island on Sunday. After arriving back from mainland on Saturday afternoon a number of us broke out the alcohol. We spent most of the evening at the pub. It was pretty chilled out.
Laura, Okie, Erik and me all went to the tearooms for breakfast on Sunday. We needed a good cooked breakfast after last night, and to line our stomachs for the night to follow. Okie ended up running into work to steal the HP sauce and smuggle it into the tearooms as they didn't have any. We returned it afterwards. Laura and Erik had closing shifts so they had to go into work at 12. Okie and I went to check out the surf but the only place that was pumping was Chicken Reef, which is way too shallow for stand-up. Okie went for a body-board with one of the island rangers who was already there.
At some point last week someone borrowed my bike and didn't tell me the rear bearing had seized up. I finally got 'round to fixing it that afternoon, with a little help from one of the mechanics at the bike hire. I had been borrowing Nat's for most of the week.
Laura had a pretty hard close so ended up getting an early night. The rest of us went down to a bbq area by the beach about 1km south round the bay from our house and listened to music and played drinking games for Okie's last night. He's vowed to come back at least once before Laura and I leave the island for good. From what I can remember it was a really good night!
Laura and I have both taken on extra shifts this week, Laura only getting half a day off! It's all in a bid for extra cash for our travels. We're pretty sure we're going to have to work for a bit when we get over east or we won't make it all the way to Cairns.
It's been really hot again this week, it cooled down a bit last week which was refreshing. It was humid up until today too so no-one really felt like doing anything, most of our spare time has been spent chilling out at the house, work or the pub. At least work has been quiet, most of the time we are way over-staffed and just mess about! It's been a lot of fun.
Today after Laura finished work we went for a bike ride to the basin for a swim, then carried on to Geordie bay and had lunch at the café there. It's 38 degrees today but a lot drier than it has been, so it's been pretty nice for a bike ride. The air is so hot because there's no wind, it's surreal cycling along at 15-20mph and having the breeze around you feel hotter than when you're still.
On the cards for the rest of today is a quiet one at the pub, then a round of mini-golf. Not sure what's happening tonight, maybe watch a film or something. There's a really upbeat vibe here at the moment, and we're really enjoying it.
Hope everyone's well back home, speak to you all soon.
Lots of love from James and Laura xXx
