The first very exciting days in South Africa have passed. So far we do not have much work to do for the project, so Dohy (the other volunteer) and I did some trips to see more of the beautiful environment. We went to Kappsche Hoop, a very nice little town, where we hiked to a nice spot on the top of a mountain and had a beautiful view over South Africa and Swaziland. We also saw wild horses and on the way back we got lost, because we did not follow the yellow footsteps, but after a long walk we managed to find the car. Yesterday we woke up at 4.45 am., very tough for me, because most of you know I am not a morning person, but it was worth it, because went to the Kruger National Park., which is very close by. In the Kruger National park, you can drive around with your own car and see all the different animals how they sometimes walk one meter away from your car. We spent the whole day there and saw lots of animals: zebras, elephants, rhinos, monkeys, giraffes, and many more. We even saw little elephant babies, which was a breath- taking experience. It was very hot and humid, about 37 degrees, so after our tour through the park we were very exhausted. It was a amazing experience. On the way back to the volunteer house we drove through a township, people actually advised us not to drive through, but we weren't scared at all, all the people seemed nice and very friendly. Of course I have seen documentations about townships on TV before, but driving through it was a completely different experience. All this people live in small little houses without windows and broken walls, to get money they offer food on the street, they make a fire on the ground and grill corn that they sell, or you can get a haircut, not how you are used to get one, there is only a chair on the side on the road, where you sit down and they will cut your hair. I was shocked by seeing all these thing, but on the other side everybody seemed quite happy with their life, a lot of young people were doing sports, they were playing football or running. So far I can say that I feel very safe in South Africa, before I arrived I heard many stories about the high crime rate in South Africa, but I have not seen or experienced any of this. Next week we start with the monitoring, that means we are going to some schools and see how they are doing the sports lessons. We will be talking to the coaches and children and give them some tips how they can improve the lessons. I am really excited and look forward to the visits. I miss all of you!
