Getting through the airport and finding my ride wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. When I got in the taxi, there was another volunteer that had arrived, too. Turns out it is the same guy I became Facebook friends when I joined the IVHQ group and found some people saying they would be in Ecuador soon. We had no idea either one of us was getting there the same night. Our conversations on the drive to the house made us both realize we had the same concerns and hopes for this adventure. It was very nice to arrive with a new person like me. The drive in was dark, but all I noticed were all the dogs on the streets. Apparently, that's Ecuador's thing. It's sad. We arrived at the house around midnight and were greeted by Monica, our house host. She was very sweet and gave us a tour and the keys. There's a bit of a language barrier so far, but I'd like to think I'm doing so-so with my español communications! There were a few girls awake when we got here so we all exchanged the "what's your name", "where are you from" "how old are you" "what project are you doing" "how long will you be here"'s. So far there's a nice melting pot of volunteers. Then us newbies got unpacked and situated before going to bed. The beds are very hard and the pillows not so soft either. I used my neck pillow I had from traveling and it got the job done! As I was falling asleep, so many thoughts were running through my head at once. I tried not to think so hard and just fall asleep to the howling of the wandering muchos perros.
