12th June 176km
Spent the morning packing up, getting quite good at it now. Learning lots of little gems (top tips) to pass on to fellow 'small space' travellers, like, 'don't cut up your French bread in the van unless you want to sleep in the crumbs' (like shards of glass in your arse)! ' do your food shopping before you set up on a campsite and find out that the nearest place to get provisions is 4 km away'.
Went to Lacanau lake (different part) and decided to have lunch at very nice local restaurant.Whole meal, 3 course including wine and two coffees approx 20 euro.Lay by lake for hour before setting off to next destination, heading south for the last time to a place called Soustons, on the coast just above Biarritz. Decided to try leaving the driving until late afternoon, that way we can enjoy the day and travel later, still arriving at our destination with time to check out the bar! (another Top tip).Beautiful aire, right on the lake and beach.Parked next to Vdub owners! French, who didn't speak a word of English, though Drum appears to be a very good ice-breaker.They asked (in French) if he liked fish and chips! They think that is all us Brits eat - not far wrong there then!
Sarah's First French lesson!!!She wanted the loo so went up to a French lady and said (with a Birmingham accent) "au der twallet, siveouplate" - the lady gestured that she didn't know (or what a t*** we have here) then Sarah said to her "no problemo auf veedersain pet" !! (That went down well).
God knows what the foul smell in the night was.We were heaving and blamed Drum but it wasn't coming from him for a change.
Drum's Dog Blog (have noticed that the blog site are bleeping out my words….well I wasn't being rude, what else do you call a girl dog?)
b****es were busy this morning. That usually means we are moving on.I was right, but we didn't go far.We went and sat outside where I could smell food. Then we went inside and the smell of food got stronger. The nice people let me in! I think the smells were Fish and steak and it was driving me mad.A very nice French gentleman on the next table came over and offered me a large chunk of steak (medium rare). They tried to tell him my constitution would not tolerate such luxuries. So to my advantage he didn't understand and I got the steak.Tasted good I think as it didn't touch the sides…bring it on….. I like France!!Had a tick on my leg and the b****es were fussing and flapping around like cats on hot tin roofs. They got rid of it finally and I ended up being brushed which I don't mind especially when they do it hard under my chin.I can't get to that.
There was the most indescribable smell in the night of rancid boiled cabbage and fish plackton….wasn't me.
13th/June Soustons
Found a bar with free Wifi just up from the aire.Decided to catch up on the blog and Skype anyone who was online.Got some bad news from Mom Seymour, that our beloved and longlived Bootie (Our Cockatiel) died.Too sad to move on today so staying another day.
Soustons is a stunning location, the aires is right on the lakefront and is obviously very popular.Very few Brits seem to have found it though lots of Spanish and Dutch.Very watersports orientated with lots of surfers and dudes with dreads. We are parked up next to what appears to be the warden for the site.A little old French lady and her two elderly dogs. She must be in her 80's and appears to be permanently parked here as she has a small garden and a yard to sweep. We are sharing her electric which is a God send and saves on the gas.Weather remains good so far. Matt & Andrew would love it here, the surf is fabulous, the beach is a short walk from the aires.
