Whilst a bit better today was still cool, overcast and windy.
We decided to stick close to home today and went for a wander around Nanaimo. We started at the waterfront, checked out a market and went for a walk along the harbour side boardwalk. Looking down into the harbour the water was nice and clear and we could see some crabs and starfish. We also spotted a bum that kept bobbing up before diving and disappearing for several minutes. Turned out to be a large seal. Some fishermen tried to hand feed it when it popped up near the fishing pier and it happily took some crab they'd caught but wasn't interested in salmon or roe so must be quite well fed.
We checked out the town, lots of narrow cobblestone streets with funky shops, cafés and bars.
Here and there we found odd things like an apple tree heavy with fruit and blackberry brambles all easily accessible and ripe for the taking. An elderly gentleman complete with a small dog, slowly rowed a tinny out to the bay. He had some nets on board so was off fishing.
From the town we drove a little north and checked out the local beaches. Some of the islands are very close to the mainland making the bays fairly protected.
Deciding to rest up and get ourselves sorted for heading to Vancouver tomorrow where we have two nights before the cruise, we went back to our apartment and did very little for the afternoon.
We cooked dinner and got most of the packing done but mostly enjoyed a relaxing evening.
